- This is amazing and insane. Just because auto workers belong to an union and they tend to vote Democrat Jr. and his buddies are willing to let a whole industry go down under, and everyone else who depends on them.
The equipment and the know-how is there, all we need is to tell the automakers what kind of cars we want.

- GM is making a big deal about their upcoming Chevy Volt, a plug-in electric/hybrid vehicle due out in 2010. The Volt uses a state-of-the-art lithium ion battery that enables the car to go 40 miles on electric power alone, before an on-board engine kicks in to recharge the battery. Price tag? About $40,000.
Well, guess what, back in 1996 GM came out with the all-electric Saturn EV1 that can go 75 to 100 miles using a lead-acid battery, and up to 150 miles using a Nickel Metal Hydride battery on later models. GM was the leader in electric vehicle technology back then. So what did they do? Terminated the program, recalled and destroyed all the EV1s they had leased, and focused on making huge SUVs instead.
So, who would pay $40,000 for a car because they want to save money on gas? Most people who need the fuel economy couldn''t afford it anyway. No wonder Detroit is in deep trouble. - Reply to this comment

The US AUTO INDUSTRY has to realize that there is a LOGICAL AND NATURAL limit to the number of new cars you can sell to a single country!!
Especially after the last decade where they have sold SO MANY MANY MANY cars..
They don''t need "help", they need to downsize like any business who has seen a reduced DEMAND for their products.. Simple capitalism..
When they make cars that are efficient and not pieces of junk, after all the cars they JUST SOLD wear out, THEN they can expect to sell some more..
