lastdance133 - The UAW worker rode high on the hog when times were good. That''s fine, but those days are gone and the rest of the world has caught up and industrialized. It is simply not feasible or competitive to continue the current status quo. GM and the UAW have to reorganize, sorry, this is the sad reality.

I listen to a Lansing radio station in the morning, they broadcast to a large UAW audience. These people always repeat that the UAW protects workers, they are so brainwashed that they don''t even realize that they are their own worst enemy. Many of them bypassed higher education because they had a foot in the door to GM with a family member in the union. Taking great joy from being able to make the big bucks without having to pay the piper with a college degree like the rest of us. Non GM workers have had our noses rubbed in it for years as we watch the UAW worker buy all their goodies, something the rest of us can''t afford. In the meantime we''re supposed to bend over and buy their cars so they can continue to live the good life. I say, get in line with the rest us that have been dealing with what the "real" workforce faces.

So many people are willing to support a sports team, even one that remains a loser for years, like the Red Sox. But their supporters were true blue, and the Sox came back! Nobody however seems to be willing to support and root for a "team" that actually means something and has a real impact on our country and lives, American industry. When you buy a foreign product you are supporting foreign enterprise.

Posted by machineguy - Yes, I know all about the job banks. All of us not in the UAW want to pull our hair out. My husband and brother work for non-union GM suppliers, my brother works for GM developing computer programs for their vehicles. We have alot to lose if GM files Chapter 11, but are willing to go this far to break the ridiculous UAW. These people are simply not in reality and have always thought they deserve better wages than the rest of us.

lastdance, here is the last sentence of my original post. Read it and then kindly explain why you would need a crystal ball or mind reading abilities.

If we wont buy their products then we will just have to GIVE them our money so they can keep paying management to run their business into the ground and keep building SHlTTY CARS!

Pelosi: don''t you spend one cent of our taxpayer money on these losers. The manufacturers along with their UAW counterparts deserve exactly what they''re getting. They made junk for years and thought American''s should buy it just because it was made here. Along came the Asians and showed them how you make quality cars that you can rely on. Instead of trying to copy the quality of their new-found competitors the Big 3 turned around and guaranteed the UAW no layoffs for as long as you live. Good. Now pay the price and to hell with all of you.

Here are some wages of individuals I know: Plant Manager-130,000, Financial Controller/CPA-84,000, Human Resources Mgr.-100,000, Electrical Engineer with Masters in Computer Programming-120,000. Anyone want to tell me why a lineworker with no degree deserves comparable wages?

Its worse than even this!!!

Job bank means some of those workers sit in a room all day and do nothing. They are waiting for assignments that never come but management has to keep them on the payroll as part of the contract with UAW.

You get extra pay if your station requires you to put certain codes into the test machine because that is considered "programming".

Some work stations that only need one person must have two assigned (and on the payroll) because its in the contract.

Workers receive face masks for "hazardous areas", like spray painting and receive extra pay fo rwearing them.

Designers avoid putting certain features in the cars because ti would require new agreements with the union. Its easier to just leave it out and keep building the old gas guzzling design.

But, hey, they are building union quality products.

GM has been treading water for along time, struggling to stay afloat. In the meantime the UAW called for strikes at the Acadia and Malibu plant''s. These were their best sellers, the UAW are dumb$hits contributing to their downfall.

Yes, send that bailout money to mainstreet, but please exclude the UAW, they have made us bend over for too long with their overblown wages and benefits. Now it''s time for the rest of us to get a break, the UAW has had their''s for years.

I live in Michigan and the union is arrogant, only family members get a foot in for jobs. A daughter of a union member got a job at Fisher Body in Lansing starting at 55,000 a year (she just graduated from H.S.). This makes me want to puke, individuals with college degrees do not start at that wage! Many members of my family who have jobs related to the auto industry (non-union) want Chapter 11 to force re-organization of these contracts. We are soooo sick of the spoiled UAW workers ruining it for the rest of us who live in reality.

ps. material managers, marketing specialists, cost accountants, quality managers all make within 50,000 to 100,000 a year. The high end wage being what they make closer to retirement, some will not make close to 100,000 although it is something to strive for.

LEGISLATORS: LET THE MARKETPLACE FUNCTION. THE MORE YOU INTERFERE, THE BIGGER THE MESS. THE MARKET EMBODIES THE COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE OF 300 MILLION OF US. YOU CANNOT HOPE TO BE SMARTER THAN THAT. IF THESE COMPANIES ARE DOING ANYTHING USEFUL, THE MARKET WILL PAY THEM TO DO IT.

I have valid information and post the truth. I will not hurl insults in the midst of a discussion. You seem too angry to be reasonable. Your divisive anger is why our country is failing to find workable solutions for serious problems. I do not deserve your spite and will not discuss further with you.

Goodbye

The three American automakers generally pay about 30 percent more per hour in wage, pension and health care costs than Japanese automakers.

Ford, according to its annual report, paid $70.51 per hour in wages and benefits to workers last year. GM''s annual report says its labor costs average $73.26 per hour, while Chrysler''s costs average $75.86 -- all well above the average $48 hourly cost incurred by Toyota, Honda and Nissan.

Yes, even though the ship is on fire, refuse to do anything to help put it out.

First I need to throw those that started the fire overboard. Then I''''ll put it out.

Posted by rightbehind at 01:28 PM : Nov 16, 2008

Some say the UAW is at the top of the list.

Anyway, if the fire is not put out by someone, everyone will sink with the ship and "that will show them that they can''t push us around",....now won''t it.

How do you feel about the "foreign" cars (Toyota, Volvo, etc.) manufiactured in the US at an average wage of $47 per hour? Who pays their benefits?

A typical executive job in the US pays $25 to $30 per hour. But for some reason, the Detroit "middle class" thinks big business is ripping them off.

I wonder if the US government can fix this for us too.
