Prices At Pump Approach Year-Ago Levels Even As Likely OPEC Cuts Push Oil Prices Higher
- Nationalizing oil companies may not be such a bad idea. The government could take the profits made and make capital investments in the solar farms in the desert Southwest, and wind farms on the Plains states. The development of CNG for trucks, marketing of biofuels could begin at service stations instead of oil companies blocking those new fuels. Anyway, with all the problems facing Washington DC nationalizing oil companies is unlikely but the proposal does have some merits. Remember, that with the OPEC cartel, and the monopoly of Big Oil there is virtually no competition for lower oil prices. Only Republicans believe such rubbish. Oil companies need to have the some very heavy taxes placed on them. The tax money needs to encourage alternative fuels such as coal to liquid fuels, biomass, and cellulosic ethanol.

- At least Clinton gave much more emphasis to alternative energy than the following eight years of Bush ever did.

Gosh you''re right that was just awful.
CLINTON HAD EIGHT YEARS TO CORRECT THIS.
WHY DIDN''T HE????
WHY, WHY, WHY DIDN''T THE CLINTON ADMINISTRATION FOCUS ON DEVELOPING ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES when we supposedly had all that money to pay for it???? - Reply to this comment
- Remember the great Clinton days?

Yes, I remember.
I remember people driving Hummers and monster SUV''''s, and NO ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES were being developed.
They say it takes 10 years to develop a new energy source. If this was started during the "great" Clinton years, WE''''D HAVE IT BY NOW. When we NEED it.
So much for the "great" Clinton years.

Bet you wish you were liberal - free to like any sort of music - Springsteen, James Taylor, U2 etc and not hate it because of the musician; free to go to a movie like Aviator, W, Apocalypse Now, Platoon and not hate it because of the actors or the director; free to go abroad to Europe without hating the country because it''s socialist; free to look up at night and see them for the wonders of physics they are rather than the product of an alien. All this hate just limits, limits, and limits more. Only the liberal mind can truly enjoy the world we live in. - Reply to this comment
- The drop in oil prices is because of a recession in the US which could at most last two years. The long term demographics for oil demand are very grim. There will be huge demand for oil far outstripping our ability to supply it. We can not even for a moment drift away from an Apollo or Manhattan project to develop new sources of energy like solar, wind, geothermal and huge efforts at energy conservation. There is no reprieve from China and India industrializing. By 2020 we will have over one billion cars in the world up from 800 million now.
Prof. Hubbert predicted Peak Oil in about 2005. He had accurately predicted US peak oil production in 1970 at 3 billion barrels per year now down to 2 billion barrels per year in 2008. World production of oil has been flat since 1998 at about 24 to 26 billion barrels per year. No one has proved Hubbert wrong yet. Read Ken Deffeyes "Beyond Oil" if you want to learn about peak oil. We need a comprehensive energy plan such as the Picken''s Plan so we can eliminate foreign oil. There is no national security issue more important to our country''s economic well being. - Reply to this comment

- Invest the savings in developing alternatives. Thirty years after president Carter proposed such an endevor. It is better to be late than never. Move away from financial capitalism (which brought us the current disaster)to industrial capitalism.

- OPEC and the big oil companies don''t seem to understand that their rape of the worlds lower income peoples is the cause of this economic crisis. 5% of the world has 98% of the wealth. This 5% can only consume an even smaller percentage of the ''GWP'' Gross World Product. (The wealthy can only ''use'' so many washing machines, refrigerators and other household products) Unless the top 5% percent is willing to loosen their pocket books in the form of charity, Walmart, KMart, JC Penneys, and main street USA (The World) will go out of business because nobody can afford to buy anything. - Prices in Southern California are dropping at a good rate, but as mentioned, it is approaching an election month. I know a lot of people cut down on their consumption at the end of the summer and so far this Fall. A lot of neighbors are staying put and spending more time in the neighborhood and with close friends. It will be interesting to see where we are in December.

- MrOutside12...... You seem very troubled. I think professional help is in order for you. Repeated bashings of Obama with so many untruths tells me you are quite angry and in dire need of attention - even if it is negative. I hope you can find happiness again very soon. May God bless!
