..........

I''m an independent myself (but what the hell does that mean anymore).

As the experts have said... first... put the regulation back into futures trading (the issue that has made oil prices the problem they are today). Second, after regulation is put back into the futures trading... THEN drill. Sadly, drilling without proper oversight, would only benefit so very few... and not the majority of Americans who need it most! (You, me, and virtually everyone else on this board).

And on the note about the media, sure... voting records are made public. But what "public" has the time to sift through all the jargon and garbage just to find their voting records AND the text on each bill they voted on?! A person would have to be retired and having no other pending hobbies or vacations to tend to, just to sit at a computer to find all this info.

And many "trust" the media to give us this information? HAH!

At the buffet of information in today''s world. The modern role of the American mainstream media is just to tell us that salad is being served and napkins are available upon request. Beyond that, we have to find out rest ourselves!

DaysRnumbrd - I know what you mean by hearing the news and then not having the exact bill number to follow up with.

I do believe yo - I''m in the same place with other issues in the news.

I just wanted to read the text of the bill. Sometimes our lovely media pits us against each other by not quite giving all the facts (gosh - did I say that out loud.)

I totally agree on the oil spill thing.

I''d like to see Oil Shale mined ''insitu''. It is suppossed to be environmentally friendly, and possible for $30 a barrel.

If the contracts were opened with the caveat that the oil could only be used in the US, or say at least 50% in the US - we could eliminate our dependence in ten years. Then use the taxes from it to make the government build FREE sources of renewable energy.

If Obama said he''d do this - I''d vote for him. And I''m a conservative. (''course, I''d want more than just talk...)

Congrats to Exxon, they are making money as any business is designed to do. We shouldn''t be upset at any American company just because they record record profits. Unless of course, their profit has been achieved through illegal means or through corruption.

Personally, I wouldn''t mind more drilling, including offshore, but being a cynic and pessimist of corporate "America", I am certain that the big (American) oil companies would not drill for the benefit of the country these executives live in... rather... solely for the profits. And those profits lie in countries who have the money (Euros) to pay for the oil.

The visualization of a massive oil spill off the coast of California, while drilling for oil that gets sold to China, makes me sick. Wouldn''t that make any American sick?!

I had only seen it on a news show on MSNBC. They mentioned the senate bill, the number, as well as the details of the provision. Sadly, I do not remember those facts other than the highlights of that story.

It would take some time for searching, but I know those facts are available.

No. Something about the words ''''$11 billion QUARTERLY profit'''', ''''revenues rise 40% over last year'''', and ''''biggest quarterly profit ever by any U.S. corporation'''' stopped me from making that comparison.

Of course, at the time I was trying to pay for gas...

An article on this site several days ago showed how the big oil companies are actually spending their revenues mostly in stock buy-backs, dividend payouts, and executive bonuses... not R&D as they have cried about time and time again.

The big oil companies have been helping themselves to what is left of this country through the help of the politicians they own. It is not rocket science to realize this fact, as many Americans have for many years.

Bullpucky - you make it a law that it can only be sold here - period.

If they don''''t want to drill for it, I''''ll start the company that will.

An attempt was made earlier, to put a provision (on some bill) to have all future ANWR oil sold only within America.

McCain and most other Republicans voted against that provision.

They (Congress) have the plan, and that plan is NOT to help America! Only to help those corporations who help them keep their "elected" position of power.

ubrew12 - the oil companies are NOT the ones deciding how much oil to pump - that would be OPEC.

Even if they did - the entry barrier into this field is not that tough that a new company could do the pumping.

I''m surprised their profits are THIS large. If you had oil and a steady profit already, would YOU sell it? I mean, you''d be trading oil for dollars by selling it. Last time I checked, that was a bad trade. Dollars keep heading for the dumpster, and the new global gold standard as a currency is OIL. If I were Exxon, I''d slow production to keep the price high, reap the profits from what I DID sell, and know that MUCH more profit is coming in the future from what I DIDN''T sell.

Its pretty obvious which way oil and the dollar are going. If you had oil in the ground, why would you trade it for increasingly worthless dollars?? Make a reasonable profit for your shareholders, and hold off any further pumping for a future rainy day.

ubrew12 - so I suggest you check it out.

Do I like paying $4 a gallon. Nope. But I''m not stupid enough to think the oil companies are getting all that money.

So the government got 33 billion out of the oil company in taxes for that same quarter, did you know that ?

And the shame of it is, I bet the VAST majority of it was spent on social welfare instead of doing something to repair the roads or influence the cost of oil (like using some of our own!)

I don''t care if the liberals want to take credit for it. I don''t care if you want to make it so the major oil companies can''t buy any more contracts by limiting the total number they hold in this country, thus making a new oil company. I don''t care if you want to make it so the oil can''t go out of the US.

BUT - DRILL NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so tired of hearing it won''t help for the next ten years.

WHO CARES!!!!!!!

In Ten years we''ll be better off.

Imagine if we had done this 38 years ago when OPEC first started to raise its ugly head.

We could tell them to go eat oil!

DRILL NOW!!!!!!!

Rosie, I''m curious since you seem to know so much. How much exactly are the oil company after tax earnings per share when compared to other companies? State your source, please. As a Democrat leaning moderate, I have nothing against corporate America as long as the corporations act responsibly. Multiple scandals in recent years would seem to indicate that there''s a problem out there, and the American taxpayer is getting the shaft as usual.

Old Thought, Just goes to show that a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing. The Democratic congress (which has only been in office since January 2007)does not have a 60 member bullet proof majority, so can not "control" things. There are 49 Democrats, 49 Republicans, and 2 independants who caucus with the Democrats but do not necessarily vote with the Democrats. Partisan ideology is blatant on both sides, so not much gets done. Both parties share the blame, but lately the Republicans have been truly obstructionist.

Or do you just launch into yor diatribe without thinking ?

If yuo threw a glass of cold water on a liberal in the middle of a sound sleep, he''d jerk awake denouncing corporate America.

Dems have controlled the house for several yrs now, and have not done a single thing, except make things WORSE for the working people. Everytime I see pelosi on TV barking, it makes me sick. There is NO party line anymore in Gov''t...its how WELL and how LONG can we scam the American people into thinking we are doing things for the ''common good'', while we keep our OWN pockets filled, keep our OWN fabulous health care, and OWN retirements FULL of undeserved cash??????
