Gov't Reveals Wide-Ranging Investigation Of U.S. Oil Markets Began 6 Months Ago
- Remember Cheney''s Energy Commission minutes that were kept secret under executive priviledge?? Gee, I wish the supreme court hadn''t ruled that the records could be kept secret. I''d like to see if $5 a gallon gas was discussed??? If there was nothing to hide, then the records would be public. I''d like to see if there was "a plan" to manipulate prices - wouldn''t you?

- No one ever mentions the infamous Cheney/Energy meeting.
The participants are TOP SECRET.
The topic was most likely how to screw the USA .

- It does not take a genius to figure out that people around the world are beening screwed by oil speculators. The Fact there is commission to over see it just proves how corrupt the Bush administation is. This commission could do somthing very easy, just set a reasonable price for oil. In the next few years the world enconomy (World Bank, Meetings of the 10 top economic governments) needs to introduce the elimination of oil and food speculation. Rich people take your money eleswhere or face the consequences.

- Possible Manipulation ??? It''s is for sure the GOP elite are grabbing what they can before riding off into the sunset. The investigation is designed too, as being part of the cover up.
Between the Wall Street speculators and OPEC, who are getting back at America over Iraq, Bush has placed this country and indeed the World in the most precarious posistion since Pearl Harbour.
Pity we can''t chop him off right now, it is a long time until November and they haven''t finished stealing the family jewels yet, their sticky fingers are everywhere. - Reply to this comment
- There is so much fluff in oil prices it''s not even funny.
In 2001, oil was trading at $18 a barrel and now it''s over $130 a barrel, and it''s not costing OPEC or Big Oil more money to pull it out of the ground.
That is a 625% increase in the price of crude oil during the last 7 years.
Think about it.
Like I said, it just completely amazes me that the majority of people in this country can''t figure out what''s going on.
It''s utterly mind-boggling how dense the general public really is.
Look at these charts and educate yourselves.
This is a chart showing how the Dow Jones Oil & Gas Index has out performed the regular Dow Jones Stock Index by 250% since 2001
http://tinyurl.com/4lg3ox
This is a chart showing oil prices going up over 140%....that''s right...140%...IN LESS THAN A YEAR AND A HALF.
http://tinyurl.com/43w3ga
Again....for all you whack jobs who believe that "global demand" for oil has increased 140% proportionately to price in the last 18 months....and 625% since 2001......keep drinking your Kool-aid. - Reply to this comment

- It is this very (all-too-common) pattern of "business behavior" that immediately comes to mind every time I hear the conservative Republican rant that virtually EVERYTHING should be "privatized".
Allowing business free-rein without sufficient regulatory checks and balances invites massive abuse and eventual disaster.
The entire model of unfettered American capitalism can be summed up in the words "caveat emptor" or, "let the buyer beware". Put another way, it also means "never trust any business to put YOUR interests ahead of their own." - Reply to this comment
- PS-- Look for the CFTC report one year from now.

- Despite the skepticism of CBS poster Lemonskink, occasionally one of the checks and oversights in the federal system actually works.
For example, the GAO has been vigilant about lavishly spendthrift federal outsourcing under Bush, uncovering all manner of corruption and waste.
So, it may be with the CFTC-- although this investigation should have taken place long before now. Perhaps, as Lemonskink suspects, Bush made a discreet call to the commission when it told him evidence of market hijinks had been found.
Curiously enough, when Bush entered office, gas was $.99 per gallon. If, as one estimate has it, from 40 to 60 percent of the recent oil prices increase comes from sheer, unadulterated commodities speculation-- creating a "shortage" where none existed before-- this is ample evidence Bush has been content to look the other way while Americans are robbed.
For Bush, highway robbery is "just business". - Reply to this comment
- Lets face it: our government hasn''t shown that it''s really all that much better (or different) than a government like Myanmar''s, when you get right down to it.
Both allow their "untouchable elites" to do whatever they wish and get away with murder at the expense of the majority of the populace. - Reply to this comment
- What, the American Sheeple are being ripped off by Corporate America with the help of our corporate-owned politicians?
So what''s new!?
Oil companies last year made $100 BILLION in Pure Profits?? Gee, where did that money come from! Why are corporate taxes far far below where they were in the 1960s? Why are the wealthy getting all the tax cuts?
Stop the class warfare being waged on hard-working Americans! - Reply to this comment
- The investigators are part of the problem, and don''t think for a minute they are not. The government under the Bush regime planned this action a long time ago. The first step was to get a war going, continue to propagandize the people, and build lie upon lie. Scare the hell out of the population with constant threats of terrorism which they continue on to this day. There attempting at this moment to say Al Qaeda and Iran are in cahoots. This is another tactic. They want to pressure the idiots to say go ahead and drill in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge, we have to have it even though it''s a years worth of oil. Idiots will go along with it, the oil companies will continue with the price rise no matter how much oil is discovered. They want to get as rich as possible before alternate energy, which we already have, is unleashed on the public.

- All I know is that I''ve watched the regular gas price at a local Chevron station go up .08 to .19 cents a gallon EACH DAY for about three weeks now.

- What a sham. They investigate to make it look good and it goes away. Bush is an oil man is he not? In such hard times you would figure oil men would take one for the team anf help out fellow Americans by cutting prices. Not in America. They see this as an opportunity for wealth. I''m personally tired of hearing excuses for rising gas costs. Whats next? A gas truck had a flat tire in Texas so prices will go up?

- Nothing short of Arrests and Trials for the Bush/Cheney Crime Cartel, Complete Suspension of ALL their Policies, including the Patriot Act and Presidential Authority to Ignore Congress and the American Citizenry, and Imprisonment and Death Sentences for ALL the Neocons that planned this entire Coup d''''etat, will be adequate.

Amen, veteran72, A good, OLD FASHIONED PURGE is in ORDER for these pretenders to Democracy; It''s as if a corrupt worm has burrowed deep within the bowels of our once proud government and festered into a diseased mutant rebirth of NAZI GERMANY, circa 1933. Meanwhile, our forefathers are RESTLESS in their graves! - Reply to this comment
