Well, we''ve tried nationalizing Iraq, thinking about doing it to Iran and, thanks to Pat Robertson, feel the need to do it to Venezuela. Since we can''t raise wind-fall taxes on the oil companies or remove subsidies, maybe we should nationalize Exxon/Mobil.

Everyone else has.

Incog, I''m in agreement about everything you said except for the intent. These are not misguided polices simply because implied in chapter 11 of NAFTA, interference by local and state governments are penalized by cut of federal aid to those who dare legislate and enforce rules in the interest of their citizens. Misguided denotes mistaken; nothing of the sort is possible under those conditions.

The article of Confederation were weak because the several states actions interfered with common, national interest. NAFTA is the extreme opposit of the spectrum, whereas, the states interest are subordinated not to the national interest as intended, but to that of the corporate state.

Interestingly enough, you alluded to currency and the importance it plays in the United States problems in relation to China and the EU, but that''s just the begining. Iran, Iraq and eventually Venezuela wil convert their oil trade from that of the dollar to the Euro. It''s been proferred that our current posture to these nations isn''t oil based, but currency based. We''re fighting and threatening war over accounting issues, but not very many accountants, bankers, CEO''s or politicians strap-on the uniform or a rifle to bolster their positions, only those who tangentally benefit from the crumbs dropped from the table.

As a big believer in ''trickle-down'' economics, I know what a $35 billion profit boost means for me, the consumer: a free Atlanta Braves travel mug with every fill-up...Whoohoo!!!!

G. Bush isn''t the only problem. Before the "stupid" years of Cheney/Bush, the auto industry has fought tooth and nail CAFE standards and the behest of big oil. GM, Ford and Chrysler has placed the nation''s well being in jeopardy for short term profits from SUV''s.

Oddly enough, we''re depending on the Japanese auto makers to save us from high oil prices just like we''re depending on the Chinese to save us from the mortgage crisis, North Korea and dare I say, the Dali Lama. We''ve asked Canada and Germany to save us from the Taliban and the hated and ignored United Nations to save us from Al Qaeda in Iraq. So may be Venezuela is going to save us from Colombia''s weak and corrupt government?

One things for certain, the United States government and its people can''t save themselves from themselves.

Globalization can be a good thing, but there''s a right way and a wrong way to do it. The Europeans did it the right way, by coming together and creating a common currency and a common set of laws, so that every country in the European Union at least can compete on a level playing field.

The U.S. did it the wrong way, by simply creating free-trade pacts with other countries with no preconditions. So what happens when you have a country like China where labor cost is much less that your country? The jobs move there and WILL continue to move there. China also manipulates its currency to its advantage.

While other countries create trade pacts to protect their industries and their people, the U.S. trade pacts only serve to protect and increase the profits of its corporations over its national interest. People are and will be living with the results of these misguided policies well into the future.
