parrot123 - "Why isn''''t the government doing anything about this ??"

Government has done plenty.

Government restricted drilling for oil in many places in the US.

Government mandates of fuel additives be put into gas, which increases the price of gas by up to 15 cents per gallon.

Government taxes at every level account for as much as 50 cents of the price of every gallon of gas.

Government is doing all it can to keep the prices high. What else should they do?

Detroit Sets Bold Goal:
Exporting U.S. Cars
By JOHN D. STOLL, NORIHIKO SHIROUZU and NEAL E. BOUDETTE
April 8, 2008; Page A1

DETROIT -- Last year''s landmark labor deals and the weak dollar are breathing new life into U.S. auto plants, leading Detroit''s auto makers to plan sizable exports of U.S.-made vehicles to markets around the world.

General Motors Corp. is looking to export U.S.-made vehicles to Europe as well as to China and Latin American markets such as Brazil, company executives confirmed. Chrysler LLC, primarily spurred by exchange rates, has already started shifting production from Europe to the U.S. to take advantage of lower costs and available plant capacity. Ford Motor Co. is considering ramping up exports if it can bring labor costs down, people familiar with the matter said.

At the pump, the national average price of a gallon of gas jumped 3.6 cents over the weekend to a record $3.339, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. That''s 58 cents higher than a year ago.

Why isn''t the government doing anything about this ?? Most repugs seem not to care.

Maybe Jesus will come back and turn water into gas. That would be nice. Let us pray.

By the way, about 40-50 cents of every gallon of gas goes to the government in the form of taxes (state, federal, local). That''s more than what the oil companies profit from gas sales!

Does that makes the government ''greedy''?

This is just the beginning. Just as peak oil is hitting the world, many oil exporting nations are rapidly consuming more and more of their own product, leaving less to be exported. $4/gallon gas is going to seem like a absolute bargain a few years from now. Some people in Europe already are paying $9/gallon and it doesn''t seem to slow anyone down there. I expect my current car to be my last gasoline powered car.

luvwknd - "I thought there were policies against price gouging."

I''m curious to find out what you consider to be price gouging.

For example, Exxon earned a whopping $40 BILLION in profits last year - on sales of $404 BILLION. That''s only a 10% profit margin. Do you consider that to be ''greedy''?

Have you ever sold something on ebay? I bet you made more than a 10% profit on it. Does that make you greedy?

Hillary? Corruption and sleaze follow her around like the dust cloud that follows Pigpen from the Charlie Brown comic strip.

If there ever was a good year for there to be a choice of ''''None of the Above'''' on the presidential ballot, this is it.

Leftyintexas - if you are a proponent of bigger government, than you should be touting Bush''s accomplishments. After all, annual federal spending has increased at TWICE the rate that it did under Clinton.

Bush has expanded the welfare state more than any President since LBJ. In fact, his Medicare prescription plan for seniors was even a big hit with the GOP!

Bush increased federal control of government education with the ''No Child Left Behind'' Act, which his buddy Ted Kennedy endorsed.

If more federal intervention and regulation will make things better for America, why are you criticizing him so? After all, if you are an Obama or Hillary supporter, aren''t you essentially advocating more of the same?
