Kentucky Derby Winner Euthanized After Months Of Painful Leg Injuries
- gunnerv1 - the disease is FOUNDER, not flounder. Some horses are very smart and some very stupid and others in between. Just like people. My husband was a riding instructor at a farm in New England and they had 150 horses there. He said each had it's very own personality and some were smart, dumb etc. and he cared about every one of them, just as much as people.

- All this publicity about Barbaro going through his battle with job-related injuries finally resulting in his death should give us all pause for thought. Do you folks realize how often horses are put down for injuries incurred in this "Sport of Kings"? Imagine yourself with a 900 or 1000 pound body on four very thin legs, and running at outrageous speeds on account of the mercenariness of your owner. Horse racing should be outlawed. So should the trotters and the "art" of dressage. All this type of activity is VERY hard on the horse. My husband who was a riding instructor when he was young hated horseracing and dressage because of what he learned while he worked with horses. Yes, horses are put down almost daily and there is no publicity about it. Barbaro is not a unique case. His is a commonplace case. The Good Lord gave us domninion over the animals. I DON'T think he meant for us to mistreat and exploit them for persosnal gain. Having dominion would seem, to me, to mean that we should be good stewards over them. But then dictators (and kings of olden times) have dominion over "their people" and look how they abuse THEIR power! So I guess people will go on torturing and mistreating and exploiting animals as long as their is an earth. I grieve.

- Tell me this...what does a story about a horse have anything to do with the war in Iraq? It is apparent that some people will do or say anything to try to get a rise out of someone! This is about Barbaro--not Baghdad. Now I know both of those words begin with the leter B,and have the "Bah" sound kiddies, but you must keep blending those letters and sounds and you too can figure out that the story is indeed about a horse and not the war! Give me a friggin' break!
Anyways...I'm so sorry that this horse had to be put down, but I give the owners and handlers credit to not prolong any pain or suffering that this animal may endure. That poor horse fought the good fight, and it is very admirable of all that was done to try to save the horse. God Speed Barbaro!! - Reply to this comment

- hey Elgraz, I am with you about the animal lover bit, and the ex? Well thank god you dumped her. I became a vegetarian last Feb after looking up dog eating in China. You want your heart to break? Look that up and look at their faces in all of the cages, it is the most horrifying thing. I don't belive in racing horses or greyhounds. People are just beasts when you think of it, and I am glad you are on the same page. My heart breaks for that horse, I hope he is great now someplace better than here. He didnt deserve this though, they should have still tried. I know he had a bad night last night, but anyone would a day of surgery, wht did they expect, no grogginess and soreness, give me a break.

- missut2,
You seem to be distressed. Isn't that a shame. Get out of the kitchen if you can't take the heat. - Reply to this comment
- Beautiful horse, beautiful story.
As sad as it is, it's much less painful than the situation in Iraq and the Oval Office.
At least Barbaro's owners new when to call a halt -- for the sake of the animal. - Reply to this comment
- I completely agree with missut2. This was a beautiful loving animal. Most animals are more wonderful than some people I know.

- The other story is - that breeders are breeding FREAKS. A horse does not normally have pencil thin legs that are so fragile that an animal can sustain this kind of damage in a strong gallop. People want to whine about scientists who seek to clone stem cells and organs that can be useful to humans but it's okay for breeders to breed freaks.

- It is a shame when such a beautiful animal has to be let go.That was a magnificant horse and I'm sure the owner did what had to be done to save that creature from suffering any longer.

- Yes,maybe we will be invading Iran, next.maybe things really suck in Iraq........ ~However~
This story is about Barbaro a brave and noble horse who did his very best out of love to his owners and his jockey..a noble animal who really tried to be the best he could, just by being himself. And this story is about how he lost his gallant struggle, and how his owners, because they couldn't see him suffer the way he was, made a very painful decision.Barbaro can inspire humans
by his courage, and his bravery. And,I do agree,he would have been this generations Secretariat. - Reply to this comment
- tapperpl,
Thank you, thank you very much..as Elvis would say.
You are right on the issue. I always loved animals and to a lesser extent, humans. I grew up in The Village, NYC in the 50's but will never forget those fabulous days
Take care.Hope to continue to see you on this comment site. - Reply to this comment
- Farewell Barbaro, may you be at the Rainbow Bridge in heaven. I am so thankful the owners and vet decided to let him go. With Barbaro's pain escalating, it would have been cruel to let him remain alive. Now Barbaro is running in the fields of heaven, healthy and happy...

- To all you low-life animal haters...IF YOU FEEL THE WAY YOU DO ABOUT HORSES AND ANIMALS IN GENERAL, WHY DID YOU READ THIS ARTICLE??? The headline alone indicated the nature of the story...
My sympathy to the owners and trainers. It is so hard to make the decision to let go of our pets..be they large or small. Most of the time, they are our best friends.
Rest in peace... - Reply to this comment
