I''m retired military, & have never said our military is inferior -- Enlist, you''ll learn a few things.

Ioweign, General Odom is a little out of date.

The Iraqi Army has made great progress in the past 6 months.

You are still missing the key point which is that people must think that peace is possible and that they DESERVE peace and DEMAND peace. When that happens, the militants and AQ get their butts kicked out of Iraq.

The only way the Iraqis will think they DESERVE peace is to experience peace. If that takes the awakening councils then so be it.

ibsteve2u,,,, Nobody expects Al Queda to be defeted in the next administration, no matter who wins. -- Yet listening to conservatives, they think they already are defeated.

The problem is all the drains on our resources & foreign policies of a GOP administration that only increased the problem have not only fueled the problem, but, allowed more like groups to form.

J, those who armed Saddam are mostly dead or in Alzheimers and don''t remember because it was so long ago.

You need to focus ahead and not some past perceived sin.

Ioweign, look at it this way.....

If the surge works and violence declines to the point where people "expect" peace and expect to be able to go out for supper or to the grocery, then true peace will break out all over. That is why the more peaceful areas have more leads being turned over to the Americans or Iraqi forces about AQ or militants.

Petraeus is paying to reduce that violence. Just how many times in occupations has that strategy been successful ? The FBI usually calls it extortion. The mob calls it protection. This Administration calls it the surge.

Retired General William Odom, former National Security Agency director:

What historical example is there for rebuilding a collapsed state from the bottom up except by civil war in which a single leader wins?

Why is Iraq not on the road to Balkanization? Fragmentation?

What historical example is there of the U.S. military building an army for a government whose leaders have neither the power to rule nor the capacity to bring warring factions under their control?

Do you (Petraeus) propose to string out the surge although the Army simply does not have forces to continue?

Why did the Iraqi forces you (Petraeus) trained a few years ago fail to emerge as an effective fighting force that survives and serves as the core of the Iraqi army today? If you (Petraeus) succeeded, then why do we have this problem with standing up an effective Iraqi Army?

libsluv2spit,,,, Go back & look at the GOP involvement in creating the problems, we armed Saddam & the Taliban --
-- Our GOP under Ronald Reagan armed the Contra''s & trained them, another catastropic smack against our national security.... This GOP is still using people who created that mess to spin our intel.

Seriously, j-whitman - do you believe that al Qaeda just dries up and blows away the day the Republicans are out of power?

lollll...believe me, they can be destroyed. It will be more difficult now that this Administration, PNAC, and the Republicans have allowed their greed to build them such a lovely big training and recruitment facility that encompasses the entire nation of Iraq...

Destruction is best achieved through the focused application of force.
