- Why shouldn't traitors be brought to trial once the hostile occupation is ended?
The US should not only not provide sanctionary to Iraqi traitors, we should also send George Bush, D. Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld and all others who actively supported the invasion to Iraq so they can be tried for war crimes against the Iraqi people.
Iraqis who support the US occupation are traitors to their felloow countrymen. Same as anyone who supports a hostile foreign military occupation of his own nation would be considered.
If Americans engaged in similar behavior, Bush supporters would be demanding they be shot on sight. Why the double standard for Iraqi traitors? - Reply to this comment
- "What do Iraqi's Want?"
The current relationship between the US and the Iraqi's reminds me of one not dissimilar to that of a controlling parent who refuses to allow their child to choose their own future path. It is no surprise that Iraq is a mess. Iraqi's have no ownership of processes or outcomes. Initiatives and "strategies" (such as they are) are made in Washington, owned by Washington and implemented by Washington.
Have we considered that the majority of Iraqi's may now want to divide into three separate states. Clearly, that would benefit the Shiites and the Kurds - although the Sunni's may be less content. No, the administration, will not seek an answer to that question because to do so would mean that the Shiites would seek common cause with their kin in Iran, the Turks would declare war on the Kurds and Syria would become the proxy government for Sunni Iraq. In essence, it would not be a good outcome for us.
Frankly, I do not think that the President wants to have to take such a decision on his watch and is, therefore looking to delegate that responsibility to Guiliani or Hilary. - Reply to this comment

According to George W. Bush, Vietnam has turned out pretty well.
On his visit there in 2006, he lauded the country as an economic powerhouse and an "ally in the war on terror."
Lets give Iraq a chance to turn out well on their own.
Like Vietnam did. - Reply to this comment

Many will argue China already has invaded the U.S. and with the trillion dollar trade deficit the U.S. has with China its hard to argue with them! - Reply to this comment

- The only meaningful end to the violence in Iraq will come from a mediated solution involving the Middle East region and the U.N. The U.S. has done all it can do militarily. The Democrats are correct. No more funding without a timetable for disengagement. It is time, for a change, for the U.S. to use diplomacy and world opinion to its advantage.

- tbweb,
Why do you think the Iraqi government is so powerless and helpless after years of military support and assistance from the U.S. ? (Maybe it doesn't have the support of the people ?)
And why do you think it will be any different 10 years from now ?
Or do you propose that 130,000 U.S. troops be kept there forever ?
That isn't going to happen.

The U.S. doesn't want a VietNam Redux, where the U.S. left the way it did and all those U.S. supporters were slaughtered and U.S. fathered children was gathered up, packaged and sent to the U.S.!! But fine then, if the U.S. leaves Iraq the way its being proposed, cut-and-run as its coined then the U.S. had better make room for another surge, a surge of loyal Iraqis who supported the U.S. but now won't be able to safely stay there! At least they will come to the U.S. legally and the U.S. can make room for them by kicking out those who are not here legally. - Reply to this comment

Right. He wasn't "about to" do it. He was going to wait a year, then do it.
Bush has repeated his epic mistake. - Reply to this comment
- Re: "In my humble view the U.S. cannot ask Iraqis to stick their necks out and support the U.S."
The U.S. can ask all they like, but the Iraqis appear to be well aware that the "Iraqi Government" is just a handful of collaborators placed into power under illegal U.S. occupation, and who have aligned themselves with the illegal invaders of their country.
With the U.S. invading forces clearly facing a mounting military defeat in Iraq, and little chance of the Iraqi puppet officials ever being effective there, why would the average Iraqi choose to disgrace themselves by collaborating with the illegal invaders or their installed puppets? - Reply to this comment
