Yep, my thoughts exactly.

- If this country is stupid enough to still support this administration's gung-ho plans to attack Iran than it deserves all of the consequences involved with it. It will not certainly not be a "cakewalk" and the other "ex-superpowers" are not going to stand idlely by if and when this happens. Enough lives have been lost and are being lost in Iraq, all hell may literally break loose if Bush/Cheney/Rove get their way.

- I had more confidence in Gates but then today he joined the obstructive Bush crowd with his comment that these standard, longer 15-month deployments will bring stability to families who don%u2019t know when there loved ones will be home.
I was in Iraq when the 172 were extended for four months only 14 hours before they were supposed to go home. Only through incompetence did the generals not know they would be extended before then. This administration is sick and it has filtered to the military. - Reply to this comment
- Gates' job is simple. He has stepped into a position that is capped for progression and merely dictates verbatim what is required of the neo-con strategists that believe in a larger goal, but have spent little time considering the means and how it affects everyone.
A Democratic congress and incompetent Republican dictator is what our democracy has become. If the last 6 years was a "do nothing congress"...then the next 2-6 years is "we can't do anything congress".
If thats not true than why is this administration having trouble finding a retired General to fill the position of theatre operations?
And of course our Army will do it...what choice do they have they are deployed in Iraq and any dissent will be dealt with swiftly. You only volunteer to join the rest is a military venture.

- Some should ask Senator McCain, if things are going so well in Iraq.
Why do we need this troop surge and why are the troop tours being extended by three months longer then normal? If its safe enough for anyone including Senator McCain to walk down Baghdad why was he wearing a bulletproof vest, surrounded by 30 or more heavily armed troops and covered by Apache and Blackhawk helicopters overhead.
Senator McCain has completely and utterly lost it. The only thing I can see is the old rally Hitler strategy of really behind me against the "enemy" routine used by every corrupt leader in human history including the one in office now. - Reply to this comment

I will too, and please...keep all of the soldiers in your prayers. Our buddy was killed on his first day back from R & R, only 8 days after his son was born and my husband and many other husbands may not ever get the opportunity to see thier children, both older and unborn. Please pray for all of them - Reply to this comment
- As for this whole...oh Iraq is as safe as Hawaii or whatever...then explain to me please how come I have a friend who will never see her husband again and this man will never have the opportunity to watch his son grow up. If Bush and all his supporters think it is so safe, then go..ENLIST and GO...SEE YA LATER. Once again for the idiot that says "oh did the Army issue her kids" maybe at night as you tuck your children into bed and hear them say I love you mommy or daddy you should realize that there are soldiers our there who don't get that opportunity and soldiers who will never have that opportunity again, all to defend your right to talk sh*t. Remember that when you say your prayers at night.
Also before you say anything more..think about if that was your son or daugher, your husband or wife, or your brother or sister...would you still support this extension? - Reply to this comment
- As I read these comments, some of them make me proud to be a US Soldier, others make me more angry than you could ever imagine.
As a soldier and the wife of a soldier I have been on both sides. I have been there, and I have waited at home. Hearing this news tears me up. I have just been informed, BY THE NEWS, NOT BY OUR UNIT..cuz someone at the Pentagon can't keep their mouth shut..that my husband and our buddies will spend an additional 3 months in Iraq. HOWEVER, they will pay us an additional $1,000 a month. Is that in some way shape or form supposed to make up for the fact that my husband will not get to see his son born, or see him roll over for the first time. Now he is going to miss his first Christmas as well. Oh, but here's your money...I don't care about the money. Also lets not forget that a female is deployable FOUR months after their child is born, no matter if their spouse is deployed or not. So lets not worry that both parents are fighting for your right to acted stupid and this child may become an orphan. To the guy who says "did the Army issue her kids"..without the men and woman in the Army and other branches who have kids, you would not have a military. - Reply to this comment
- Does anyone really know why we're even over there?
Let's think about this issue objectively.
Reason 1: WMDs? There were none.
Reason 2: Iraq attacked us? This was absolutely not the case no matter how times Bush/Cheney implied it.
Reason 3: Iraq had ties to Al Quaeda? clearly no the case and there is absolutely no solid evidence whatsoever no matter what Bush/Cheney say or claim.
Reason 4: To spread "Freedom and Democracy"? Our two biggest allies in the region are Saudi Arabia, run by an aristocracy and Pakistan, run by a military dictator.
Reason 5: To send more troops as not to dishonor the fallen? This is the most insane reason of all. What would Pat Tillman say or any soldiers who've already lost their lives in this conflict, if they were able to speak from the dead, how many them would say let's waste more lives and keep the ball rolling so you don't dishonor me?
Reason 6: We have to fight them there instead of here? This is really ludicrous, 14 of the 19 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia and were Saudi citizens, there were no Iraqis onboard any of these planes. So how does attacking Iraqi prevent attacks from terrorists from Saudi Arabia or any other country for the matter?
Reason 7: So Muslims don't invade/take over our country. This one is really wacko. The likelyhood of our country being taken over by Muslims is as likely as the country being invaded by Martians. Only the most paranoid rightwing nutjob would buy that one. - Reply to this comment

Sounds like a good time to bail!
More and more of our bravest and wisest troops are refusing to comply with the shameful Bush regime atrocities and war of aggression, and are resisting service.
These are the only true U.S. military heroes in the entire U.S. inflicted, criminal debacle in Iraq. These are the U.S. soldiers that we can really be proud of.
We need our troops home now and rested, so that they may assist us in regaining control of our run amok government.

- He has us wedged so badly that I am not sure we can get out of this mess. If we leave Iraq and Afghanistan right now, we will be leaving an open call for all extremists and terrorists. If we stay, we are fighting a war we cannot win with soldiers that are exhausted, starving, underequipped, and with poor support from the government that sent them there. Not to mention there is no protection for us at home against further attacks because our troops are all being sent to the slaughter in a battle for democracy with a nation who wants no democracy against people who do not fight using the rules of engagement!
Bush, Cheney, and all the other administration of Bush needs to suit up in military gear and go serve 18 months in Iraq....if any come back...then we will talk.

the74blaster
The Democrats can assure a landslide victory in 2008 simply by upholding and defending The Constitution of the United States of America against all enemies foreign and domestic.
Bush and his henchmen have forwarded the belief that preemptive war, illegal abduction, secret prisons, torture and murder of prisoners, and the mass surveillance of our population is what our founding fathers actually envisioned, and that we just got it wrong in the 225 years before Bush's dictatorship.
If that's not a domestic enemy then we have never had one.

- I agree 100% with you 74blaster. But they're good Christians and that's the only thing that matters to a lot of people. They feel obligated to sacrifice the lives and futures of our military personnel - but if you're talking about stem cells, well now that's a different story. This country has it's priorities so screwed up.......

- This is a typical political move by the Bushies. They know the military is over extended and that recruitting is down. However, they also know that they cannot reinstate the draft without risking a landslide victory for the democrats in 2008.
So they just extend the tour of duty for those who have given so much for their country. Its a shame we cannot say the same for president Bush or Mr. Chaney. They just used their families elite status and chickened out of their patriotic duty. - Reply to this comment
