Mark Twain (penname of Samuel Clemens) was a very compassionate man.

Concerning scientific experiments on animals, he wrote:

"I am not interested to know whether vivisection produces results that are profitable to the human race or doesn't. ... The pain which it inflicts upon unconsenting animals is the basis of my enmity toward it, and it is to me sufficient justification of the enmity without looking further."

"O Lord our Father, our young patriots, idols of our
hearts, go forth to battle--be Thou near them! With them--in
spirit--we also go forth from the sweet peace of our beloved
firesides to smite the foe. O Lord our God, help us to tear their
soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their
smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us
to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their
wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble
homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of
their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn
them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the
wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst,
sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter,
broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge
of the grave and denied it--for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord,
blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter
pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their
tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet!
We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of
Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that
are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts.
Amen"

"Sir you are so right on your comments. I talked with a good friend of mine just yesterday about being in a tank in Iraq - He said that tank hulls, in the driver's position are being penetrated by the sophiscated IED's being used now. That is almost unbelievable but it is true. Our forces are so small - we are ineffective against odds like that with equipment that is outdated."

Thanks :) As I said, we aren't talking ships and planes, which take years to replace. Even tanks take some time to replace. But things like armor, humvees and other day to day equipment the troops need is short and there's no excuse for that. And that's not anybody's fault but Bush. He overtended our forces, then compounded the error by not compensating adequately for losses.

We look at the deaths in Iraq and everyone gets irate on them - but lost in all this are the lives lost daily in our own country - for different reasons. It seems we are focused in the wrong areas. We need to focus on the problems at hand here - shore up our borders and tell anyone, - you want a piece of us - come and get us.

Don't mean to ramble - just a compliment on your comments.

Is God really on Bush side?

Is Bush really on a mission of God to bring Jesus back to this world?

Is God from Down South like Bush?

If answer to any of these question is YES, God needs Psychiatric evaluation just like Bush !!

"The statistics for America's defense during the Clinton years reveal the deep-seated animosity of the administration toward those who served in the military. The Army was cut from 18 divisions to 12. The Navy was reduced from 546 ships to 380. Air Force flight squadrons were cut from 76 to 50"

The Cold War is over. Who are all those forces going to fight? We couldn't afford those levels of forces with no Soviet Union. The problems in Iraq aren't a lack of planes or ships. We have plenty of those.

Sorry, but Bush has exhausted both our troops and their equipment - despite plenty of time to compensate for it.

The cold war had just finished and we didn't need as large of a standing army as we did before. We still wouldn't need a large standing army today if that warmongering as*shole Bush was in power! Oh you might also want to mention that everyone of those cuts was with the approval and cooperation of a republican controlled Congress and helped balance the budget. You know, that numbers thing that Bush has fu*cked almost beyond repair the last 6 years.

On the contrary, it's my standing offer:

Anytime one of these economic top 0.1% folks just can't take the pressure of these massive tax burdens, they can switch investment portfolios with me.

It would be a terrible sacrifice on my part, I know, to have to pay those massive taxes every year, but out of benevolence for my fellow Americans, I would do it.

"...as if the top 1% uses government healthcare..."

As a taxpayer, I'm tired of footing the bill for D*ick Cheney's dumb lifestyle choices.

His heart operations come out of the taxpayer's pockets.

The least he could do is what I always do: watch my diet, and make time for regular vigorous exercise.

Who the hell does he think he is ?

I was careful to avoid saying "benefits from government aid."

They benefit from the lower income consumers who buy their cheeseburgers and automobiles and jeans.

I'm just saying it isn't a one way street.

The wealthy benefit tremendously from the economic power and prosperity and protection to be found in America. They'd be S.O.L. without the mighty army of consumers of modest means -- the ones they lay off when they feel the need to cut costs.

By the way, what is the median income of the troops fighting in Iraq ? Do you know ? I don't. But I bet it's not very high.

"The top 1% of taxpayers by income pay 36.9% of all federal taxes (earning 19% of the income)."

So says Wikipedia.

Of course these people benefit the most (top of the line healthcare, educational opportunities, investment opportunities, etc.) from the economic engines that are powered by the scores of millions of low- to mid-income American CONSUMERS who purchase their products -- the ones who are laid off by the thousands when the wealthy corporations need to "cut costs."

When MacDonalds has to rely on millionaire customers only, they'll be in trouble.

It's more complicated than simple statistics can show.

"The top 0.1% of taxpayers by income pay 17.4% of all federal taxes (earning 9.1% of the income)."

Those "poor" unfortunates, to be burdened so.

I should have that problem.

"Next - Clinton dismantled KILLED our military which is WHY there are problems now."

No, he didn't. The cuts in the military began with Bush I and the end of the cold war.

Any problems the military is facing are not from Clinton. The biggest problems are armor - body and vehicle, the replacing of vehicles damaged during the last four years and readiness - the troops, both regular, reserves and guard - are exhausted. While major weapon systems take years to deploy, armor and vehicle replacement does not. It does not take six years to replace those things, which is how long Bush has been around for (not to mention the Republican control of Congress for 12 years). So, where is Bush to get the guys these basic things? Sorry, but blaming Clinton for not enough body armor and vehicles is just plain desperate.

Bush's relentless war schedule is the cause of the problems with the military, not a guy out of office six years.
