And we don't have our share of idiots here? I just lived through 10 years of Governor Mike Huckabee! The fact that he's gone now is proof that things can only get better. I hold out the same hope for our country after Bush! - Reply to this comment
- Radio,,, Chalibi had good referances also, remember ?? If Isreal was involved in his defection, It would have already been exploited... I really doubt if he's got anything that hasn't already been vetted.

- He may not be the real. Normally, such visits are taken care of by their diplomatic offices in that country. I doubt it, particularly that "he was looking for a cheaper hotel". No, never!

[edit] Defection
The Israeli paper Haaretz first reported that Askari may have instead defected.[10] This was echoed by a report in Asharq Alawsat, which said that Askari defected to the United States.[13] That same paper reported on March 7 that Askari was being questioned in northern Europe before eventually being moved to the US.[14] He was able to leave Turkey under a different passport.[15] One Israeli analyst said that Askari's family had left Iran before he disappeared.[16] Another report said that the family had left under the guise of a vacation.[17] However, a US intelligence official told The New York Post "We don't have him."[16]On March 8 The Washington Post said that Askari is willingly cooperating with Western intelligence officials, and is providing information on Hezbollah and its Iranian connections.[18] Among other things, this includes information with regards to the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing.[19] Askari also smuggled out intelligence documents and maps that detail Iranian involvement with Muslim militia groups, including Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad in Palestine, and the Iraqi Mahdi army and Badr Organization.[15] A US intelligence official said that his defection was "orchestrated by the Israelis", although Israeli spokesman Mark Regev has denied this.[18] The New York Post reported that an Iranian dissident group helped plan the defection and is negotiating with Western intelligence agencies for a "permanent place of exile".[17] - Reply to this comment

I cannot think of one good thing George W. Bush has done for this country or for the world. Not one d a m n thing!
History will judge whether he is the worst president in the history of our great country, but he is definitely the worst of the modren era. - Reply to this comment
- No defection? of No importance? from wikipedia
Askari disappeared on February 7, 2007 in Istanbul, Turkey after flying in from Damascus, Syria. He had been in Syria to discuss production of military equipment, and his trip to Turkey was to meet with a European arms dealer.[5] Reports say that two other people had reserved a room for him at the Ceylan Hotel for three nights, but that after arriving Askari reserved a room at the cheaper Hotel Ghilan.[6][7] It is not clear if he ever checked into the hotel.[8]
Some Arab diplomats have told the media that Askari was kidnapped by the US CIA and or Israeli Mossad. On March 6, a top Iranian police chief confirmed that kidnapping was a possibility.[9]
Reports say that Iran sent several defense officials to Turkey to discuss the matter during the last week of February, and have also asked Interpol to investigate the case.[10] Because of claims that Israel was behind the disappearance, security was boosted for Israeli embassies and senior officials abroad.[11] On March 6 the Turkish Foreign Minister said that Turkey was conducting "an extremely broad investigation."[12]

- j-whitman, just so you know, Northern California is my favorite area of the U.S. And if your costs of living weren't so damned expensive, I'd be living there.

- Scott,, I gave up praying 40 years ago, it didn't work... I don't think Bush can compare his Presidency to anyone's but Grant's.

- Remember that every modern president before Bush engaged in diplomacy. We'd better be praying that this produces positive results.

- There was no defection of any Iranian General. Even if there is any good intelligence on Iran, that's often intentionally leaked out for deception. Even some defections are intentional when tensions are high and good intell. is much demanded.

Well, I don't know about the "really good schools" part. It certainly has gotten better, but Little Rock Central High in 1957 was only 50 years ago. Still, we did get Bill Clinton for better and for worse (See, I'm not beyond criticizing him. But he was so much better than who we have now in the White House. And he was a pretty good Governor, too). If you look at our congressional delegation, Arkansas is much more "purple" than it is blue or red. - Reply to this comment

- Seven-pesos,
What is your problem? I am one of many unapologetic liberals who happen to live in the South. My state of Arkansas experienced a Democratic landslide, much like the rest of the country, this last November. We are not all ignorant hicks. So cool it, because your rants make you seem woefully unintelligent. - Reply to this comment
- Oh, forgive me,, I forgot,, Bush has a habit of staying out of war zones.

- If it were for diplomacy to work and the talks to move forward to a high level, there should not have been cross accusations. I would expect Iraqi side to take up that question with Iran and Syria rather than the US. In fact, there is no concrete evidence of interference. I still don't know where we stand at negotiating with Iran and Syria. It's simply an effort outside the parameters of the United Nations where we are separately demanding more sanctions.
