U.S. envoy David Satterfield pointed to his briefcase which he said contained documents proving Iran was arming Shiite Muslim militias in Iraq."

Clever: He did not show those documents to the Iranian. Iran wants evidence and so does Syria. We don't give them. We say we have it.

This is a sure way to engage your opponents in meaningful dialogue:

"U.S. envoy David Satterfield pointed to his briefcase which he said contained documents proving Iran was arming Shiite Muslim militias in Iraq."

What is Iran supposed to say to that?

The Bush administration does not want peace and stability. ExxonMobil and other war profiteers are raking in too much money for them to allow their puppets in the White House to do anything other than continue instigating the violence and instability.

It's good for ExxonMobil's (et al) bottom line and that's all that matters to the Bush administration.

Clestes:
If it were for diplomacy to work and the talks to move forward to a high level, there should not have been cross accusations. I would expect Iraqi side to take up that question with Iran and Syria rather than the US. In fact, there is no concrete evidence of interference. I still don't know where we stand at negotiating with Iran and Syria. It's simply an effort outside the parameters of the United Nations where we are separately demanding more sanctions.

Is anyone out here interested in discussing the article in a rational and intelligent way cause I would like to trade some thoughts, but have no interest in trading insults or quoting the bible.

The US is warmongering in the Middle East because it allows ExxonMobil, other oil companies and war profiteers generally, to continue amassing exorbitant unearned (undeserved?) profits.

The US invaded Iraq so ExxonMobil could gain total control of Iraq's trillion dollar oil and gas resources.

All this talk about peace, democracy and freedom is total nonsense.

D. Cheney held secret meetings with oil company executives long before the US invaded Iraq. And refuses to disclose what was discussed. We now know what was (probably) discussed and we can only speculate how much ExxonMobil (et al) has paid G. Bush & D. Cheney for their outstanding efforts to help ExxonMobil (et al) increase their profits to record levels. And, gain total control of Iraq's oil and gas fields.

The violence and instability is part of the plan. And the Bush administration intends to sustain that violence and instability as long as possible.

It is pointless to discuss "winning" or peace so long as George Bush or D. Cheney is in the White House.

So, in this first diplomatic effort no real progress was made. Frankly I did not expect any. I think that this diplomatic effort is nothing more than a smokescreen.

Any thoughts?

I read that news. I think he was a retired Deputy Defence officio of previous government not active duty. Again defection may not be seen as a credible intelligence. More spade work is always needed. There may be more trying to get out of that country due to fear of war.

Interesting to note, j-whitman: Mitt Romney is the only one of the top tier Republicans who has been married only once! And I wish Republicans would run Ann Coulter, because they would be mowed over in history's biggest landslide!

This story which the "actions" allegedly took place is only two days old.The events of his disappearance is a month old I certainly would not dismiss it or the potential information that could be extracted.

Iranins and Russians are known for these tactics. Just see the timing. That could be another diversion from reality. The defection would mean bringing home an empty shell!
