In 1786 Jefferson and John Adams went to negotiate with Tripoli's envoy to London, Ambassador Sidi Haji Abdrahaman or (Sidi Haji Abdul Rahman Adja). They asked him by what right he extorted money and took slaves. Jefferson reported to Secretary of State John Jay, and to the Congress:
The ambassador answered us that [the right] was founded on the Laws of the Prophet (Mohammed), that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have answered their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as prisoners, and that every Mussulman who should be slain in battle was sure to go to heaven.[1] - Reply to this comment

- The Maliki government must tolerate the militias because they provide the muscle for the clerics, who hold the real power. Who wishes to see the Shiite clerics emerge in control of Iraq? That's right, Iran. In the meantime, Saudi Arabia stands nervous at the prospect of an Iranian influenced Shia led Iraq so they have funneling supplies and weapons to the Sunni insurgency (anyone else notice the number of U.S. helicopters shot down by more sophisticated Saudi rocket launchers?). Seems as if both Saudi Arabia and Iran hold the key to resolving the Sunni-Shiite civil war. In a word: it's called diplomacy. Unfortunately, negotiation has proven to be an incomprehensible concept for the arrogance and incompetent Bush administration to grasp. Best case scenario? You do broker a truce between the Shiite & Sunni factions via diplomacy with Saudi Arabia and Iran and you effectively isolate one other player: al Qaeda. Alas, far too much to handle for our merry team of neocon bumblers.

- cherry picking like the demonic-rats did in 1998 then..... right skippy.....
It is convenient for liberals to forget that the "Grand Mufti of Jerusalem" went to Germany as a guest of Hitler during WWII...and begged Hitler to find the "final solution" to the jewish problem. This same Grand mufti used his influence to raise Two Muslim SS Divisions in Yugoslavia (Kosovo) and Albaina. These divisions were responsible for the murder of almost 1 Million jews, Serbs and Gypsies.
This same Grand Mufti was the maternal uncle of Yassir Arafat! The Mufti's war continues today worldwide. - Reply to this comment
- Rick,,,, Bush can't stop spinning -- Our Congressional Budget Office says Bush's Deficit will increase by the billions & not end up with billions in surplus.

- lars008, you are a boob! it was the first time the "newly" formed U.S. tried building an international coalition against an unconventional enemy (pirates). The focus of the United States and a proposed international coalition was the Barbary Pirates of North Africa.
What point are you trying to make with your posting? It makes absolutely no sense what you have written. You just can't put "bits" & "pieces" of history on a page and expect your hatred for the Arab nation to spread. Pirate ships and crews from the North African states of Tripoli, Tunis, Morocco, and Algiers (the Barbary Coast) were the scourge of the Mediterranean. Capturing merchant ships and holding their crews for ransom provided the rulers of these nations with wealth and naval power. In fact, the Roman Catholic Religious Order of Mathurins had operated from France for centuries with the special mission of collecting and disbursing funds for the relief and ransom of prisoners of Mediterranean pirates. They even attacked their own countrymen's merchant ships. It wasn't just the young U.S.'s. You are a boob. - Reply to this comment

The turning point in the war came with the Battle of Derna (April-May 1805), after a remarkably daring overland attack on the Tripolitan city of Derna by a combined force of United States Marines and Arab, Greek and Berber mercenaries under the command of ex-consul William Eaton, who went by the rank of general, and US Marine First Lieutenant Presley O'Bannon. This action, memorialized in the Marine Hymn %u2014 "to the shores of Tripoli" %u2014 gave the American forces a significant advantage. - Reply to this comment

- Everyone should read the poll conducted by the Harry S. Truman Institute concerning the existence of a Palestian state. The extremist in the world are one battle in terrorism, the other battle is the prevention of future terrorist. It can be won by a war of military aggression. It can only be won through the changing of the minds and hearts of the people. Areas of unrest in the Muslim world are rampant, lack of employment and the Israeli Palestian conflict breeds more unrest. Resolving the basic human condition is paramount in countering the spread of radical Islam.
