Petraeus Takes Control Of American Forces In Iraq, Says Mission Is "Doable"

"Consider This"

Today General David Petraeus receives top billing. Yesterday, I even heard one political commentator describe him as the only American General whose reputation has been enhanced and not damaged by association with the Iraq war. Not to put too fine a point on it he is, in some quarters, being protrayed as the last great hope in Iraq. Our "saviour" of sorts. If victory in Iraq relied on goodwill and hope, then, to coin a phrase, success for General Petraeus would be a "slam dunk."

However, as with so much in this war, we are forgetting something. "Success" (however that is defined) doesnot depend on General Petraeus, US forces or indeed policy makers in the Pentagon, State Department or Whitehouse. Rather to a large extent it depends on the Iraqi's. We ignore this truth at our peril. If force of arms, military strategy, commitment and bravery delivered success on the battlefield, today Iraq would be able to govern itself, sustain itself and defend itself. But it cannot. Petraeus himself seems to allude to this fact in his recent statements.

The fact is that there are aspects of this war that are now way beyond our ability to control. The insurgency is now well established, the Iraqi people increasingly see our presence as a magnet for violence, the Iraqi government is in partnership with militias, whilst Iran and Syria are increasingly influential in Iraq.

Yet, according to General Petraeus: "we can and we must prevail. This mission is doable."

They have the right to defend themselves but it is a WAR CRIME to blow up a suicide bomb in a crowd of civilians.

90% of Iraq deaths are from insurgents and militias, not from Americans.

Russia and China are backing Iran and together they are much stronger and have superior inteligence. What ever we invent they can copy or make better and much cheaper in no time. And they are not as nice or proper in war as we are. The only way we will win is to use our small nukes and we have a zillion of them 3,7, 9 megs and 2 or 3.. 50 megs...that will do the trick and quickly. Let me take over and the war will be over in 3 weeks ....and we will win ...Big time.

I hate when people like lars repeat the same comment several times...

anyhow, this war is a joke anymore, Iraq is not an American STATE, it's not our responsibility that they've turned into a CIVIL WAR.. get the F outta their mess, you don't see 100,000 troops in Israel, or in any other country where they're infighting! what a pathetic excuse to make oil companies profits, and military CEO's and investors set for life all while the blood of young men seeps into the sands!!!!!!!!!!!! #*$)($)(%*$)(

Putan and Bush are going into Iran soon. The sale of 1500 rockets to Iran from Russia was greeted with a wink and a nod by Bush. Bush sent another carrier force just to keep an eye on both fronts. It is all money money money for everyone except the tax payers. If you don't have a job in the war industry or invest in war you are stupid in this day and time. lets get rich while we reduce the world population from 10 billion to 3 billion. God this is wonderful fun. I was a 67N2C crewchief in Nam and loved it. If they have not been reborn ...you know what to do HHOOOAAA.

I say let Bush have his troop surge that he wants so bad. Bush and Cheney are so confident that his plan for Iraq will be sucessful, let him send the extra troops to Iraq and achieve the victory. It is funny how the small number of GOP senators or GOP congressional members that are opposing Bush's plan for Iraq are the same ones that endorsed Bush for re-election in 2004, then a small number of GOP senators, governors, and congressional members distanced themselves from Bush in the November 2006 mid-term elections, and some of them are distancing themselves from Bush still, but some GOP senators, congressional members, and governors are coming back to siding with Bush on his Iraq War plan since the elections are over with now, at least till 2008.

The Iraq war has been doomed from the beginning. The more I read/research, the more I believe that Congress should begin impeachment proceedings against Cheney first. Go to www.democrats.com & sign the petition to Impeach Cheney First. Also check out impeachcheney.org.

This war is so dumb right from the start that only a bunch of neocons drunk with power and lured by the promise of oil riches would have ever dreamt of pulling it off.

And the greatest suckers are us, the America people.

We're the ones left holding the bag and in the meantime, these neocons who led us down on this road to ruin are laughing all the way to the bank.

feelfree1,

I salute all the men in uniform.

They have a tough job to do. They didn't ask for this war.

And they're the ones dying there just so that some fatass in Washington can get rich with their no-bid contracts.

Jerr11,

Great summaries! I don't think I share your assessment of Patreus, though.
