- I've heard Lara before say that she doesn't much like talking to politicians, because she has to spend so much time trying to figure out what they just said. (She was talking to Marvin Kalb, I believe, when she said that.) I wonder if she felt that way talking to Karzai -- listening to these "extras" back to back, it seems Karzai is giving vastly conflicting messages. On the one hand, he's grateful for US money; on the other he thinks the US *brought* corruption to Afghanistan. He blames the US for corruption but wants the money. He says Afghanistan is 100% responsible for their troubles but lacks power to handle them (thereby, I think, suggesting that money would continue to be handy...). I see Karzai's dilemma. But what, logically, is *our* role there? If we leave, things may get worse (despite his denials) and if we stay....well, most Americans are pretty sick of paying for something that doesn't appear to be "winning." Did Lara come away from this interview as confused as I did?!
