In this interview, there is something that really bothered me with Mitt Romney. To every hard question he is asked about his positions and opinions during his carreer, he answered by telling what President Obama's actions and positions has been about these particular subjects. When would Mitt Romney be specific about his own positions and convictions, give us straight answers instead of the crooked references to others ?

I noticed that as well.

What should be learned is no candidate can promise anything specific - just a philosophy. He has to negotiate with congress to get anything done. Romney realizes this and Obama does not. Obama wants and wishes to rule by decree. Lets assume Romney is elected President and the House goes to the Dems and the Senate stays with the Dems. Do you think the specifics that Romney promised will happen? I think the same can be said if the House or Senate remained with the Dems. Romney could promise all he wants but our government is structured that the President is only 1/3 of it and 3/3rds must agree before anything gets done.

So do you like the philosophy of Freedom or Socialism? If you answer this you will know who to vote for. Granted, neither candidate will be perfect. Romney is still in favor of bigger government than I want and Obama is not a communist, as most of MSNBC wants, but leans this direction (centralized planning, limitations on property, anti-work for welfare, anti-second amendment (second amendment is there to protect against an overbearing government not for the right to hunt) and so on.

Not so-he stated that he had learned from experiences. You hear what you choose to hear. Since when is the 'truth' a crooked reference. You are blind to what Obama policies are and their impact.
itchn2go replies:

I did hear that he learned. Apparently he is a slow learner since it has taken 3+ years and he still has not tried to sit down with the other side to work out the details. What he learned is the press is his friend and he can use the press to make him look great and everyone else look wrong.

He also said the American public was not involved early in his term during the health care debate. I guess he did not hear about and still will not acknowledge the big party what was going on. I think it had something to do with Taxed Enough Already.

He does this each time to contrast the two views. Obama's view. Then Romney's.

That's Romney's strategy. Whenever he is asked a question, he answers with something about Obama says, Obama doesn't, etc. He never answers the question with something that he would do. Romney says nothing about himself, and wants you to wait until he is elected to tell us his plans for America. What a joke!
elimba replies:

Well, it seems like I am not the only one to have noticed this hide-and-seek strategy Romney is playing with us.

Sure, Obama hammered Bush in 2008 and did his best to tie John Mc Cain with the Republican President and his failed policies.

Here in this interview Mitt is being asked questions about Romney and the Governor doesn't seem to get it.

It is as if, CBS asked Romney to take a look at himself in the mirror and then Mitt replies that he is sure that Obama gave its frame the wrong color.

Anyway ...

I have listened to what Romney has said, and I have some concerns.
He says that he would move Medicare and Social Security to the states. Won't that create huge problems? First there is a transition, in which the government provides funding for a few years (no cuts there), then the state takes responsibility. Most of our states are struggling to balance their budgets, so, I see states unable to bear the load. We would no longer be paying medicare taxes to the federal government, so they would not have that revenue to invest, either.
States are already required to provide care to the impoverished, using funding from both the state and the federal government. They have had to document how they will meet mandates and account for funds/funding. So, all Mr. Romney is saying is that he will reduce our federal taxes by cutting out what we contribute to medicare. The states will increase our taxes to cover for it (interpreted as no reduction in taxes).
The same would apply to social security. I would no longer pay federally, but pay on a state level.
In general, my overall impression with this interview is that, while he sounds good, he is planning on doing something I have seen many companies do... Move items around so that the books appear balanced, but, in fact, we are up to our neck in debt. As a person who is trying to create a business thanks to Republican budget cuts - No, I do not collect unemployment, medicare, disability, etc. I have used up my savings to pay bills while trying to find employment. I am currently working as an independent contractor, making slightly above minimum wage (and have to pay my own fica and other deductions out of that), just so I can feed my family. I do not see how I am capable of sacrificing more... unless I give up my home (rent in my area is higher than my mortgage), or go without food to be sure mortgage and utilities are paid). I am not convinced that I could survive the Romney years.
Words may sound good, but, think about what has to happen should Romney be able to do what he says. The problems that exist aren't being solved, just thrust onto someone else. Think about your college students and recent graduates who are still on your insurance (if you stillhave it), who still have medical coverage while they are getting on their feet. One illness willo not wipe them out. But Romney plans on taking that away, too.

Romeny was very fuzzy about medical care for those without insurance.
ACA reduces the number of Americans on Medicaid by putting more people insurance.

What about that toy store? KB toys? That was ROmney.
I agree about GW, too. He left a string of failures, and landed the presidency. We ended up in a war that our kids will have to pay for (if they can get jobs, that is). Romney is making war noises, which concerns me greatly. GOing to war is not the way to ignore a need for jobs, and improve the US economy.

Cutting welfare before he creates jobs will throw this country into Gotham City.
I could see if he had the jobs ready (not just part-time jobs but if he actually created GREAT JOBS)
then my mouth would stay shut, but he hasn't really given me an ideal on how he will do that.
Too me it is another case of the haves trying figure out a way to take more from the have- nots so the have-nots will never have. Of course, Romney will get richer. How about this, under the Obama administration-- they have not raised a single tax yet on the federal level. Mitt is out of touch with the world. Being a Black Female going to school, working, and living in low-income housing in a low- income urban setting- I feel as though he is very out of touch with my world. The rich need poor people to exist to keep them rich. He might be doing a great thing for the people he was raised around in his community- or to his rich constituents, but not for me and for the rest of the 47%. Then with his boldness to come to a black West Philadelphian school in order to tell teachers and administrators that class size doesn't matter (it's a proven fact that it does) and him coming to the NAACP to stick it to the Black Folks that he will repeal Obamacare and other gov't assistant programs- for the sheer entertainment and pride of his White republican constituents. ( He knew that Obama has 90% of the Black vote) Not trying to insinuate that he is a KKK member- but his guy is off his rocker. Then he isn't for gay marriage and he isn't for abortions. -- So he isn't just trying to win the candidacy, but he also wants to win over the rights you have in your own bed room. When will this country understand just because you swear on the Bible doesn't mean you adhere to the Book. I am pretty sure Romney is a devout Mormon, and I don't knock him for that-- but he must understand that he can not run the country only off of mormon values because this country has many residence of different religions and beliefs. You have to be for 100% of the people- not for only Mormons with a lot of Money.

Chick - I am sorry you feel the way you do. You express yourself very well and if you continue in school will most likely be successful.

I think what you fail to see is that the government, regardless of who is in office, cannot create jobs, especially GREAT jobs. Great jobs are created when raw materials are taken and transformed into goods that people want to buy. Great jobs can also be created when a service is provided that people are willing to pay for. The government does neither of these.

The government programs such as welfare keep people down and prevent people from helping themselves. The goal should be to help people up by structuring programs that encourage school and work for welfare. Learn a skill and then go into the world and apply the skill and get paid a fair wage for the work and effort you put into your day. If this was done we would have less poverty, crime, murders, drugs and fatherless households.

As far as education is concerned Washington DC should not be in the education business. Washington DC cannot manage Washington DC never mind the rest of the country. Any money that is taken from a local district in the name of education should be returned to the district or state so the local people can allocate the resources necessary to improve school. Education is answer the all social ills. When a person cannot read or do basic math their opportunities are lost forever. Currently Washington DC waists a lot of money to administer all the programs and rules/regulations they write. How much does it cost to administer this budget (see link http://www2.ed.gov/about/overview/budget/budget12/12action.xls)

Just leave the money in the district or better yet - if we spend $12,000 per student for an education per year why not give the parents of the student the money and let them pick the school that the student should go to. Schools would compete for your business and answer to you and not the government. If you did not like the results you can take your money and choose a different school (public or private). Mitt Romney is in favor of school choice and implemented reform in MA. Read about schools in Harlem NY and the success choice is having there.

Marriage is a religious event and they the legal part is a contract. Anyone of any gender can enter into a contract. If two same sex people want to enter a contract go for it. If they can find clergy to marry them, go for it. It is called freedom. I don't think Mitt would argue.

Abortions - public tax dollars should not be used for abortions. I have never heard him say he wants to outlaw abortions but I know he does not want tax dollars to pay for them (he makes exceptions for rape and mothers life).

The ACA will hurt the poor more than help the poor in the future since doctors will not be paid enough to care for the poor (see what is happening to Medicare). Get the government out of healthcare and costs will go down. The government should be a referee only. They should not be a purchaser of the goods the referee as they do now.

I think when you swear on the bible in the eyes of the lord you are swearing to live by it but also recognizing that none of us are perfect (I have never sworn on a bible personally). We should all work to be civil to each other and help each other. Private Charity is the best method of proving help. Government is the least effective and most expensive.

With all due respect!

In reply to itchn2go, the statement you made "The government programs such as welfare keep people down and prevent people from helping themselves". This is your own opinion but not factual. I am a product of welfare and there are programs that support education and self empowerment. I am a single mother of three and without student loans, public housing, food stamps, and head start, I would'nt have been able to become the successful educator i am today. We all come from different walks of life and our stories are all different, but we are all woven together in some form. I am the educator that teaches other minority children that their is hope in what seems like a hopeless situation. It is unfair to assume that some people use these programs to better themselves. I am now an independent proud mom, that no longer need these assistance programs, and for that reason I do not mind paying taxes to support these programs, if it helps another individual rise from proverty. True there needs to be "reform" on these programs, but to do away with them and make drastic cuts, would be devastating to the family that has fallen upon hard times! Turning these programs over to the state is not a good idea to me, because if you look at states like Louisisana, that proposal would be certain catastrophe to families. I can't blame Mr. Romney for not understanding other people and their views of the world around him, all he knows is the environment he was raised..but when you;re proposing to run a country of so many diverse backgrounds, compassion and common sense is a quality you must possess.

it appears that the interviewers do not know the material well enough to ask follow up questions. I had a ton of questions for both.

Obama was not pushed on redistribution where the answers lye. Does government create jobs. Obama on wind farm jobs - would those jobs be there if the government did not subsidize them? If you gave any company a 15 billion dollars without the need to pay it back wouldn't they be successful?

Romney should have been pushed about war and the drums of war. How can the USA stop or prevent Iran from getting Nukes. Why can't Iran be contained. Do you think Iran would use a Nuke on Israel if it will also kill all the Palestinians?

CBS Evening News's "Fair and balanced reporting" (Fox News style) is now corrupting 60 Minutes. Dan Rather lost his job for showing favoritism to John Kerry. I hope and pray the same fate awaits Scott Pelley and his cronies. Unless of course, CBS News is now controlled by Rupert Murdoch or his ilk. Handling Romney with velvet gloves, while saving Steve Kroft's iron fist for Obama, plays right into the Republican's hands. A fact which has not escaped Scott Pelley. Pelley tells us, "the devil is in the details". He, then, gives Romney a pass on details and specifics regarding his policies, plans, and tactics. Instead of insisting on "real answers", he allows Romney to weasel-out of any definitive explanation. Pelley & company emphatically persist in the fiction the presidential race is tied despite mounting evidence to the contrary. Is this 2012, or Orwell's 1984?
In a cowardly need for contrast, Pelley appoints Steve Kroft to act as his junk-yard dog. To bully, badger, and disrespect the President with rude behavior, inflammatory questioning, and an inference that Obama is somehow responsible for all the ills that beset the American people. Kroft totally ignores the mess that Obama inherited. Most of our current calamity gestated during the administration of George W Bush. The fact that 90% of current and future budget deficits result from -- Bush's unfunded wars, Bush's unfunded tax cuts, and Bush's unfunded prescription drug program -- totally escapes Kroft's grasp. Or so, he would like us all to believe. Where was Kroft in 2001-2007? Silent!
In late 2007, America's financial system was in crisis, the housing market was collapsing, personal bankruptcies and foreclosures were rampant, and Americans were losing their jobs at a rate not seen since the Great Depression. Let us also remember that during Bush's presidency, American manufacturing and white-collar jobs were outsourced in numbers that exceeded all previous presidents combined. This happened with support and tax breaks to outsourcing corporations funded by Republican legislators. And despite all this and a pledge from Republican legislators in 2011 to obstruct any and all initiatives from Obama to improve the economy or job growth, Kroft insists on placing all blame and responsibility at the feet of our President.
And our President he is. He has steadfastly shown by word and deed his willingness to help and support all segments of the American people. He has also shown by word and deed his unwillingness to support plutocrats, and multi-national corporations, with no loyalty to America, who seek special privilege and license to diminish America's government, its resources, its environment, and its people.

Romney comes across the same as ever,.... saying what he knows the people of the country want to hear. This man is the most dishonest, disgusting, and devisive man. Does this idiot really expect the citizens to wait for him to be elected before he actually tells his plans on taxes, etc.??? How stupid does he think we are? A vote for Romney is a vote to privatizing social security and letting Wall Street screw us again, doing away with Medicare and trying to buy decent insurance with a voucher (which will never cover the price), and try the trickle down plans again (that have already failed and put us in the horrible economic situation we are in now)....I will definitely vote for Obama and be happy doing so.
