Tel Aviv is not Israel's largest city, it is second in size after Jerusalem. What kind of journalism is this, without confirming information you declare as fact when in reality it's not true.
This is only technically true. Tel Aviv as a metropolis is much larger than Jerusalem, but for political reasons Jerusalem municipality includes almost all its suburbs while Tel Aviv municipality doesn't include the suburbs (Ramat Gan, Givatayim, Holon, Bat yam etc).
If you are speaking of the legal city limits of Tel Aviv, then yes, Tel Aviv does have a smaller population than that of Jerusalem; however, I believe this piece of journalism is speaking of the Greater Tel Aviv Area, in which a few million people reside. For example, Ramat Gan is technically separate from Tel Aviv, but its border with Tel Aviv is barely identifiable.
Tel Aviv is an amazing city, liberal, cultural with great beaches and architecture. It attracts young, single people because of the job opportunities and night life. The moto is to "live in the now", however many people DO care and are involved.
Yeah, the report suggested that people in Tel Aviv are oblivious or apathetic. That's absolutely ridiculous! Te Avivians are neither. But if you've grown up in a culture where your enemies are a constant threat and occasionally follow through on threats, you learn how to live despite everything. This should be a very good lesson for anyone in the world. Life's too short. And, understanding and living this reality can force you to take advantage of life, appreciate what you have and live well. Israelis in general also have learned that they cannot be consumed by fear. You just have to live! It's very simple. And live is what they have done.
So Israel is an Apartheid State, but Tel Aviv is exempt from this status. Interesting that this piece was created just a few weeks after Bob Simon's scathing earlier one on Christians in Israel. There are many real dangers that Israel faces on a daily basis, but "war zone" as a country- not accurate. Yes, Tel Aviv is a bubble, and it is a wonderful city, and it is nice to see all of it's wonderfulness.
I wonder if the Fallout world's lore of Tel Aviv being destroyed by a nuclear strike in the year 2053 (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Israel) is an omen for things to come... hopefully not.
I never understand why American media covers Israel like its Afghanistan over here. Israel is not at all more dangerous. In fact its more dangerous to drive in a highway or live in a poor urban area than live in any part of Israel. Every single person that visits Israel from abroad (and i met many) are always suprised from how safe it is, how you easily feel at home (especailly in Tel Aviv) because people are nice kind and open. How Jews and Arabs get along pretty well in most places (Like Haifa). The whole world focuses on how Israel is dangerous and bad. The whole world is brainwahsed to think certian stuff about us (ulta relgious, dangerous, premitive, killing arabs on the streets). But before you listen to this propoganda come visit Israel - I promise you an interesting, pleasent, relaxing, thrilling and enjoyable tour over there!
Dear Mr. Simon,
in your report you mentioned the Tel Avivian Apathy. Do Remember this: on July 14 2011 hundreds of people gathered in Tel Aviv to protest against the unequal distribution of wealth in Israel. This demonstration was one demonstration among others which took place in Israel that same night. the number of people who took part in this demonstration in Tel Aviv alone was 406,000 (out of 750,000 people living in Tel Aviv region).
Nice try Bob Simon! Clearly this is a cheap attempt for payback on several vicious anti-Israel stories you did in the last decade. Apparently, after the backlash from the last hatchet job you did regarding the security wall and yor feigned indignance in interviewing Ambassador Oren, some "Jewish" guilt feeling finally arose in you. So in the previous story you ask some young Palestinians how could they possibly live with the security wall, while in this story you ask the Mayor of Tel-Aviv how can the city live under the threat of missiles from Hizbullah in the north and Hamas in the south. Why don't you make up your mind Mr. Simon, which reality is more difficult to live with, terrorism or a wall?
something that no one mentioned though: Mr Simon, please go to Beirut on your next visit to waste CBS's budget and make a report on 'Paris of the Middle East' the "bubble" that has been so for 40 years! people there party every day and have lived with the constant conflict with the Israeli army bombings, among others. exactly like those in Tel Aviv have been living with the bombing of hamas for years.
Wow, what imagination you have! "Constant conflict with the Israeli army bombings?" The last Israeli army bombing in Beirut occurred in 2006, in a war started by Hezbollah's crossing the border, murdering and kidnapping Israeli soldiers (the kidnapped soldiers eventually being returned dead). Beirut used to be a pretty cool city, until Hezbollah came along. How long before Hezbollah drags Beirut and Lebanon into another stupid, unnecessary war? The only "constant" is that the most powerful military entity in Lebanon is a terror organization.
Note that MythostheWhale can't actually refute the cold, hard, facts that garybkatz posts.
In fact, most of the fighting in Lebanon is among Lebanese. Just yesterday, two people were killed and 18 were wounded in such INTERNAL Lebanese violence; following the killings of two Sunni Muslim clerics who were shot just hours earlier at a military checkpoint in northern Lebanon.
Factions supporting and opposing the uprising in Syria clashed last week in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli. Casualty counts vary, with some reports placing the death toll as high as eight.
But hey- never let actual facts get in the way, habibi.
Mr. Simon,
The terror attacks and suicide bombing you have shown on this report have ceased because a wall was built separating Israel from the west bank. This is the same wall that you have reported on in another report talking about Bet-Lehem. In that other report you have described the wall as inhuman, and cruel. It is amazing that the act of protecting yourself and your children from death by terror attacks can be considered as inhumane. In that same report the Israeli ambassador to the US was trying to explain the purpose of the wall, but you have portrayed him as ridicules and paranoid, obviously, as this report shows, you were wrong in doing so.
Your average viewer is not able to make the connection between the two articles, and cannot link the good life in Tel-Aviv with the protecting wall of the west bank. It is a shame that as a journalist you are not revealing this link, and making it obvious.
For me and many other Israelis this unstated connection between the two comes as no surprise, and the reason for it is clear.
You're so right, Sigal! It's easy to criticize a country like Israel when it's notthe critic's butt that's on the line. Most of the people who are the most critical have no conception of what life was like, riding a bus that could randomly explode, or going to a disco, hoping no suicide bomber would try to murder everyone inside that night. Stay safe, my friend!
I was born in Tel Aviv and love it every visit. The personal danger doesn't exceed the danger of earthquake in L.A. or getting murdered in N.Y. Ignoring danger is normal human psychology. Do we all dread death every day? No. Nevertheless it's the very near future of all.
