This is all about blaming sugar for diseases that are really due to other causes. If you increase the level of sugar in your diet it will be stored as fat so it will end up in the bloodstream to be carried to fat deposits. That does not mean you get heart disease. There are other reasons why the lipids end up as plaques. And as for insulin receptors, most cells have them. They are needed because insulin is needed to get sugars into cells to make energy. Cancers are no different to other cells in this need.
What causes obesity, heart disease and cancers? I found this is the chief reason here http://kyrani99book1.wordpress.com/chapter-1/ and there are more pages to come soon.

Sugar feeds cancer. This is not just some blame game. This is reality.

You are correct, they are starting to find what is to blame. It's interesting that you attempt to explain to others yet your understanding is still limited on how the endocrine system works and you might want to study things a bit more. Your suggested cause of heart disease etc is far less clear or clearly linked than sugar. Interesting hypothesis, but MUCH is missing before you can lay claim to this being THE cause.

What an opportunity that CBS had to talk about the real realities that exist since the introduction of High Fructose Corn Syrup. The carefully crafted piece that attempted to put natural sugar and HFCS under the same umbrella is not only deceptive, but poor investigative reporting. And on top of that they bring in Joe Shmoe from the sugar cane industry that unknowingly plays into their plot. Mr. Shmoe, first you should have started the interview with, Natural sugars are good for you as with anything in moderation... the study at hand is what we all know, HFCS is very bad stuff. It's a chemical cocktail designed by man's attempt to make sugar cheaper. I am so disappointed in 60 minutes. I guess those thugs lobbying for HFCS are getting their way, once again. I literally heard them screaming, YES...YES... during this segment. IN ANY CASE, HFCS IS EXTREMELY BAD FOR YOU PEOPLE.... STAY AWAY FROM IT!!!!!!!!!!

I'm left wondering if artificial sweetners trigger the same neuro receptors as sugar, thus inducing the cravings even though it's not really sugar. If sugar is "Cocaine" for the masses, is a product like "MiO" equally worrisome? To what extent does all this hysteria extend?

Re: Sugar and the fact you presented that Doctors don't know because this is new information
Well, I tell you the test performed to determine cancer related tumor markers is by inserting glucose, which is SUGAR. Doctors are they actually that ignorant?!

Pretty much on the money. That's why I developed and introduced the insulin index in my book "Lean After Forty." What's scary is that the whole piece sounded like it was based on my book.

It's not that simple. Glucose drives insulin, however fructose is metablozied differently. To say that all carbohydrates drive insulin is naive. Fructose,a carbohydrate that we consume in high amounts, be it through sucrose or HFCS, does not spike insulin the way glucose does. Nor does it trigger the leptin response the way glucose does. Furthermore, most of the fructose ingested is metabloized into TG's in the liver and not blood glucose like other starches, hence the rise in your small dense LDL levels.

AEric1970 says:
It is really simple. Any time a food is highly processed, such as flour, sugar, vegetable oils, etc. it ceases to be healthy. Starch, sugar, and fat are not bad, when found as a part of a whole natural food, but when isolated and concentrated, these nutrients become poisons. Sugar has zero or almost zero vitamin and mineral content, as is true for flour and refined oils.

Eat all natural foods in moderation. That is the simple answer.

While I agree with most of your statement, most fruits contain sugars but since the fruits also contain lots of very healthy substances such as fiber and potassium when you look at the whole of the fruit it is healthy.

I have to agree that sugar will raise your ldl or bad cholesterol levels. I love sugar and items that have it in them. My cholesterol has always been high. Mainly the bad cholesterol level was high. When I eliminated sugar the ldl went down and my total cholesterol went to a normal level. When I re-introduced sugar back into my diet it all went back up again. I seem to pick up more illnesses when intaking lots of sugary foods, also. Not to mention sugar is bad for your teeth. Prehistoric humans never had much sugar in their diets. It was a lucky occurrence for them to find a piece of fruit if ever. We don't need all this sugar.

Oh my gosh, the tired old "personal responsibility" argument. The fact of the matter is that people, especially people with low incomes, are FORCED to buy and eat what is widely available.

Yes, yes, yes.... less, less, less..... of course, of course, of course! But our society makes it very close to impossible to FIND, let alone CHOOSE the most healthy types of foods for ourselves and our families. So some regulation of the food industry (a la tobacco and alcohol) is VERY necessary.

The food industry needs to get OUT of the business of profit at the cost of society's health and get back INTO the business, in a BIG way (yes, even if it takes regulation, which I admit, is not the perfect solution) of making food that actually NOURISHES people!

For far too long, the average person in this country has been forced into eating less and less healthy food. "Personal responsibility" won't even BEGIN to counteract what the corporate food industry has done to our food supply.... and that's not even getting into the issue of genetically modified food. They have simply lost sight (if they ever even had it to begin with) of providing food as the most basic building block of people's health. Instead, they have chosen to profit from destroying people's health with the cheapest possible ingredients and chemicals, valuing SHELF life over HUMAN life.

Is it not at all obvious to you that people HAVE been getting fatter over the past 30-40 years? Do you think that ALL those fat people "lack personal responsibility?" The majority of our population IS fat! What a bunch of irresponsible slobs, right? It takes only a slight amount of investigation to uncover the facts of the obesity problem and learn that it is now considered to be an epidemic. The word "epidemic" implies some factor that is far beyond the ability of each individual to control and make their own choices around.

There is nothing at all "alarmist" or ridiculous about saying "sugar is toxic." If scientific studies PROVE that sugar has an addictive quality to it, then by god, in my mind, that is toxic, and it should be shouted from the rooftops.

No one wants to take away your personal joy. But the people of this country could certainly benefit from an overhauled food industry that places more value on HEALTH than it does on PROFIT.

Perhaps the CEOs of these companies could then demonstrate the ULTIMATE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY by valuing other people's well-being as much as they value their own bank accounts.

Barb, you make great points, I couldn't have put it better or agree with you more, but on the subject of personal responsibility - or lack of - I think that we hardly can afford to wait until the food industry decides to change its business for profit vs. general health model, (or for the results of a major breakthrough study on sugar toxicity, as if we didn't know by now that sugar stimulates insulin production, etc).

Unfortunately, we as consumers are pretty much on our own when it comes to obesity and general disease prevention. Nobody is forced to eat unhealthy food, but I imagine you refer to the fact that junk food is much more accessible and inexpensive than say, a healthy protein shake.

Speaking of personal responsibility, what about our public school system and its role in influencing young kids into eating properly? I propose a mandatory Natural Nutrition course right along with human biology and physiology.

I do agree with Dr. Gupta, sugar and carbs in general, are highly addictive and like all addicts, they prefer to live in denial in spite of the consequences, sigh!.

Barb, this is such a load of crap. You feel bad, and it's understandable, but being defensive about it and projecting your poor choices onto others--even tasking others with the personal responsibility of the treasure that is your childrens' health--instead of being an adult and accepting that what happens to your kids is the result of your behavior is a joke. How did you not know tons of sugar, processed food and excess adipose tissue was bad for their health? You seem to be able to write and argue quite intelligently. I don't believe you're blindsided by this, or by a video that insinuates the obvious--corporations will do what they can to make more money, and they don't care about your health.

A carton of eggs costs less than a 2 liter of soda, and eggs are a superfood. A bag of carrots costs less than a box of sugary cereal, and the grain in that cereal may be just as toxic as the sugar. Processed foods cost more than produce; people simply choose the processed foods over the fruit and veggies. Addictions to sugar, MSG and preservatives last only as long as stored glucose does in a repairing liver, which is no more than three days. Unless this is the turn of the century and you're a Pima, forced onto garbage reservation land your people can't hunt or grow anything on, and you have nothing else to eat but the sugar, flour and coffee rations you get from the US government, which you eat because its the only thing keeping you alive, you have no right to blame anyone but yourself for what you put in your mouth and you kids' mouths.
