We know of nuns doing these things, too, so women in charge have not made a difference. Their Mother Superiors have done just as much covering up, and they are the ones accountable, so they too are not clean on this.

I tend to agree, if one looks at the numbers:
90% of all pedophiles are male!
So I'll know that 9 out 10 women won't touch my kids or yours!

Any one says that this change can not be done! What do you say on changing one of the Commandement, way back then; from Sabbath to Sunday !

Transatlantique says:
Patriarchally run religions are prone to abuse by their nature. They consist of sexually frustrated men who haven't attended to their physical needs and thus the still water gathers poison. Jews, on the other hand, repeat the cycle of abuse in another way, by acting out the abuse on babies when they cut their genitalia and call it "bris" or "circumcision." Some, not all, Muslims also practice this abuse although it has nothing to do with either religion. Many don't know that Moses, leader of the Jews didn't practice genital mutilation rituals, and many times throughout history, Jews have not practiced this. The Koran makes no mention of genital mutilation, and 60 percent of Russian and Scandinavian Jews today do not practice this form of abuse.

So, it isn't just the Catholics and molestation. Any form of genital infringement on a child is a violation of human rights and an abuse of power whether it results in emotional or physical scars. However, genital mutilation can result in death, and how many have to die before idiots wake up and realise that it is in fact child abuse?

if you really wanted to get to grips with this story why did you not interview colm o'gorman of one in four. this interview was a smoke screen.
what's the point of interviewing these men like martin. he is a company man who was sent in to clean up and sanitize this mess by these acts of public contrition and foot washing and tears, which there were none during his little breakdown in your interview, he is there to keep the image up of the church. how long has he been archbishop, how long was he there in dublin when it emerged that the papal nuncio had been writing the bishops and telling them not to report these cases as late as 2009, why do you think the prime minister was lashing out last summer and throwing the nuncio out. where was diarmuid martin when those letters were being written. there is much more to this story than you were willing to tell, if you were you would have interviewed o'gorman, nell mccaffrey and others who would have told you the real truth

I love this man!!! He is such a kind and sensitive soul. When he says that the sexual abuse of a child is a total abuse of power, and that the act of sexually abusing a child actually says to a child, "I control you," and that is really the equivalent of saying to a child, "you're worthless," he is totally correct. When he says, with tears in his eyes, that one must look at an 8 year old to really put the depths of the egregiousness of sexual abuse of children into perspective, he is totally correct again. Thank you for your courage, strength, integrity and LOVE Archbishop Diarmuid Martin! This is precisely what needs to be done and what has been needed to be done for years and years. You are truly a man of God Archbishop Martin. Thank you and thank God for you!!

As an Irish catholic I believe that Archbishop Martin is a good and honourable man. In one respect however he fails to recognise that the laity are the church and it is only in partnership with the laity that the church has any future in Ireland. With the serious decline in vocations and many priests unable to retire due to the huge shortage the church can only be rebuilt with the laity involved in a meaningful way leading prayer groups, meditation, counselling etc. With the financial crisis in full flow and with potential to get worse the need for a strong church as the central plank of society has never been greater. When people give up going to church in disgust at the intolerable behaviour of priests they lose their connection to the Divine which needs to be nurtured on a regular basis particularly in a world with so many temptations and distractions.
In the same way that AA and all 12 step programmes work the coming together of people to surrender their problems to a Higher Power as they know him/her a transmission of Divine Grace is received which has the effect of elevating our consciousness to connect to our Divinity and this transmission has the effect of bringing into our awareness the love of the Divine and this in turn helps us to be more forgiving and compassionate towards ourselves and all others.
This regular communing with the Divine is as fundamental to us as breathing- we simply can't make sense of the riddles of our lives without growing spiritually.

I would agree with you on the sincerity and kindness of this man. However, I would also have to ask, where have men of his ilk been for the past 1500 years of Irish History? Why is men of his kindness and empathy the sudden EXCEPTION, and not the centuries old rule?

Jeannie Cole says:
From the first time that I heard about Archbishop Martin turning over 50,000+ files to the Murphy Commission, I thought, "This man isn't going to be around for very long!" Imagine a member of the awe-inspiring "Magisterium" willing to do something honest, rather than coverup 50 years of molestation, rape and sodomy by Roman Catholic Pedophile Priests! Up until that event, this level of bravery and integrity, exhibited by a Roman Catholic Member of the Hierarchy, hadn't been seen ANYWHERE in the world! Instead of honoring Archbishop Martin with a Cardinal's hat, Rome makes him report directly to Cardinal (Doctor) Brady, responsible for some of the biggest coverups of Priest Pedophilia in Ireland. Of course Cardinal Brady was never removed for allowing Fr. Brendan Smyth to remain in the priesthood. Smyth went on to abuse over 100 children in the United States and Ireland after Cardinal Brady swore one of the abused children "To Silence!" But, in the same Vatican Mindset, which has governed the Church for centuries, Cardinal Brady is to retain the honors of Cardinal, "A Prince of the Church," and Doctor Martin is barely tolerated among his peers. Thank you CBS for this story!

Thank you Archbishop Martin - Thank you 60 Minutes for staying on this story! And I would beg as St Patrick's Day approaches, that My Irish/American Catholic friends will acknowldege the disaster that clergy sex abuse has been in both of these countries. Instead of raising a beer in celebration of our heritage, how about raising your voice? Raise it against the Vatican as it still refuses to punish any bishops or cardinals that conspired to cover up the abuse of children for decades - which then allowed it to continue. Raise your voice against all of our priests and bishops who do nothing except say "We have excellent child protection policies in place" but never demand accountability of the higher ups. Archbishop Martin shows compassion and understandng of this horror when he imagines the adults who come foward at the age of their abuse. This is about children. It is about accountability. It is about the teaching of Jesus. This Church has zero credibility until their actions reflect those truths.

borderwatcher says:
The Catholic church in Ireland is light years ahead of the U.S. church. There are cardinals and archbishops who belong in jail
here--but have complete immunity from the civil authorities. In many ways the coverup is worse than the crime of sex abuse itself. And the system perpetuates itself with the installation of more Vatican yes men such as Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York. Behind the stage Irishman with the belly laugh, there is another iron fist in a velvet glove. 60 Minutes, are you listening?

BorderWatcher asks an honest question. Timothy Dolan wants to pick a political fight for his GOP sidekicks. He will look and sound more like a Protestant than a Catholic before he's finished.
