These animals are flourishing ! Let them flourish, wherever. Think..a "Round them up ship them home project" doesn't work. Think of hereford cattle, from Herefordshire, England, United Kingdom, more than five million pedigree Hereford Cattle now exist in over 50 countries. They are killed all the time. Then those giant Flemish rabbits back to Belgium and finally the billions of German cockroaches ! This woman needs sent back to somewhere too !

How about a 60 minutes follow up to the story exploring the researcher behind the zebra dung biofuel?

so tell the TX Ranchers if they stop shooting the endangered and start harvesting the zebra poo they are sitting on a gold mine that makes the dollars from trophy hunting insignificant.

What most do not know is the fact that the so called "ranchers" are allowed a HUGE PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION. They file "ag" exemption on these ranches. For example, in Blanco County, TX, where one of the properties mentioned is located. I looked up one of many listings. For exampe 362 acres has a value of $2,193.540.00 which would cost one $13,711.00 for the year in property taxes. BUT the "ag" exemption (loop hole) reduces the property tax value down to $29,730.00 which means the owner will only have to pay $493.00 in property taxes for the year. Then regular folks, like me, get to pick up the slack. Texas is having budget problems, big time, but they allow these "ag" exemptions on these hunting ranches! Please, that is not what this exemption was intended for. Real RANCHERS, putting REAL food on REAL folks table is one thing, they should be given a break. But a ranch "perserve" that is making big bucks off the poor animals being hunted down for sport, give me a break! This type of meat does not end up in the regular food chain .... nor does it ever need to be. Yet they pay next to nothing in taxes on the land. This goes on state wide, not just Blanco County. Don't believe me? You do the research, better yet call Blanco County Appraisal District, ask if these hunting ranches are allowed "ag" exemptions. All I can say is one day they will answer for their greed!

Oh, please. Every rancher(and there is nothing "so-called" about them) who raises livestock is entitled to an ag exemption. The exemption was created to help farmers and ranchers. Your contempt for those farmers and ranchers is obvious. What evidence do you have that the ranchers who raise scimitar horned oryx, addax and dama gazelle don't also raise cattle, sheep and goats? I know lots of ranchers who raise exotics. Everyone one of them also raise livestock. Those ranchers who manage their property for wildlife get a wildlife exemption. Your non-sensical definition of greed is the act of taking advantage of a law, rule or regulation that is out there for anyone and everyone to use. You have no idea what you are talking about if you think the meat from these animals is not eaten. It matters not whether the meat finds its way into the "regular food chain", whatever the heck that means.

CBS needs to be careful. Every now and then while surfing the TV I scan a staple that I grew up with. If you keep doing balanced objective reporting, 60 Minutes could actually go back on the staple list.

For a person who talks about intellectual capabilities you don't know how to spell. There is no 0 in you. And that cross-eyed idiot is a personal acquaintance of mine. The amount of his own time and money he has put into helping to preserve these animals' most likely dwarfs anything you have done to help period. I'm also a rancher not the same as Charles I raise cattle. But we have the same moral rules we live by " if my animals aren't happy I'm not happy" they are how I make my living so I care how they feel. Bottom line is these animals cost money to keep and the ranchers have one way to make money to keep their animals happy and that is to allow a few animals to be hunted. But before they are hunted they have thousand acre ranches that they spend years being well fed free from predators with plenty of their own kind to hang around with to do whatever they do all day.

Umm, Hunter5005, I believe lkfk was referring to the "hunting is immoral in all situations" fanatic, not to your rancher friend.

I started with 8 oryx. I have developed a herd of 34. Each year I would harvest 3 to 4- the older ones and helped pay for all the ones I have raised. With the new ruling I am killing all 34 within the next 6 weeks! Congratulations animal lovers-somehow you don't mind eating steaks and wearing leather shoes and aparently don't mind me wiping out my herd.By theway the hunts are only 1,500 and the meat is excellent.

sustainable harvesting seems ok - but before you kill the entire herd, how about looking into the biofuel that can be made from zebra dung. You might want to add zebras to your business plan? Wonder if the Oryx poo has the same key ingredient? Breaking news: http://www.horsetalk.co.nz/news/2012/01/211.shtml

This was a great story until I saw that the courts have agreed with the "animal rights activist" and that new regulations take the hunting rights away from hunters and permit rights from states. Her comment, "they should live on reserves in Africa," is so very backwards and closed-minded. Hunting is almost always done responsibly. Illegal hunting is penalized strongly. There are fundamental reasons people vote Republican. This is an example. Hunters are conservationists and love the environment. They manage the herd and strengthen the genetics by culling out the weaker animals. Hunters are the predators species need to thrive. I'm writing my congressman next.

Hunters do Not cull the weak! They take the healthiest because they want the best Trophies and "Bragging" rights! The only predators that cull the weak or sick are the 4 legged kind. If these hunters had to chase their prey on foot they Might then cull the slow and weak!
davidsmith1964 replies:

Hate to tell you this montanasky, but those who manage herds of whatever species routinely cull the weak and inferior so they will not pass on inferior genetics and compete for resources with the rest of the herd. Also, more often than not, the trophies animals that are taken are the older mature animals in the herd. That's how they got to be trophies.
