2 million is far too much for Ruth. And I laughed when I learned Andrew wouldn't benefit from the profits from their forthcoming book, but his wife would. Plus ca change...
Now I understand justification for public stoning.
Soooooo - I was starting to believe them until the fiance told the "heartbreaking" story about Ruth's sister who is working as a taxi drive to support herself and her husband. Really? Family, give the sister some money! You are NOT broke, and the fact that you are NOT helping your aunt - well, it says it all. AND then to think that the fiance is the profiteer of the book - well, there are no words. I think she should have stayed home or at least quiet! Andrew - REPAY THE VICTIMS. I've seen the 60 Minutes and Today Show interviews, and you are, plainly and simply, trying to excuse yourselves and portray you and your family as victims. You'd be wrong.
Soooooo - perhaps the fiance should have stayed quiet!! The comment about Ruth's sister now having to drive a taxi to support herself and her husband...are you kidding me? Family, how about coughing up a few dollars for her. You are NOT broke, and the fact that you would let a relative live like that shows me all I need to know. I actually was believing them and felt a bit sorry for them UNTIL the fiance let the cat out of the proverbial bag! Ouch!! Not good girlie!
While the Madoff story is certainly riveting, I object to Morley calling Bernie Madoff " the greatest financial criminal in history."
Right now, right before our eyes, we are seeing that the banks mortgage securitization schemes have robbed America of exponentially larger sums. How many people were defrauded by Madoff, and how many by mortgage/securitization fraud? How much wealth has been lost by Madoff, and how much by the banks' "fraudclosure" scandals? How many people's retirement savings were lost to Madoff, and how many to investments in fraudulent mortgage backed securities? Whose fraud brought down the entire global economy, Madoff or Wall Street?
For every second spent reporting on Madoff, a week should be spent reporting on mortgage securitization fraud.
To some my comments may seem extreme, but that's only because the mainstream media has given so little coverage to mortgage securitization fraud. Anyone who doubts me, please take the time to do some reading. Google William K. Black, Adam Levitin, Nye Lavalle.
Here's a quote from William Black on Bill Moyer's Journal, April 3, 2009:
"Bernie was a piker. He doesn't even get into the front ranks of Ponzi schemes"
For anyone who is interested, the Bill Moyers/William K. Black interview is perhaps the best place to start to understand what is by far THE BIGGEST FRAUD IN HISTORY. (search YouTube for Bill Moyers, William K. Black).
Morley, you are in a position to help millions of Americans who are losing their homes and their pensions, by bringing this story to the forefront. Please don't help distract us with small fraudsters like Madoff.
of all the wealth that they have achieved not one of them asked how?...not the sons or the wife or even the investors themselves...talk about blind greed .its all bull and I am not buying it ...they knew what they were doing... lieing cheating and stealing for a living ....the son is a good communicator... but so was hitler and I don;t believe either one of them...they have money stashed and are just waiting for the right time to use it...there eyes and body language gives them away and they are not sincere
Just saw them on the Today show...claims Bernie has wanted to explain to his son(s)for the longest time why he commited this horrendous crime but Andrew has no interest in knowing "why" really? Why not? Who wouldn't want to know? And in the 3 months of house arrest with his creepy wife...didn't he explain anything then? The wife visited him for over a year in prison, didn't he reveal anything then? And by the way, where are the serious questions? I find them to be guilty and even calculating. I love that the fiance gets all the profits too...give me a break.
I sure would want to know. my guess is he made some kind of mistake 30 years ago, some sort of foul up that would cost hism and his investors and instead of owning up to it, he covered it by the ponzi and after that being what I think he is, a sociopath it was easier to just keep on lying and making his people think he was a wall street God. he knew someday this would be uncovered but hey play the game until then, you can tell this is how he thinks, look at him now classic sociopath and im sure the wife and kids see this, but hindsight is always 20/20. Too bad for all the investors and shame on them, they should donate every single dime they have and go work at McDonalds to prove they are really remorseful, otherwise I will always think they do not want to give up the good life at their own expense, the poor investors can just move on, let her have her 2.5 million HAHAHA that is a joke that is blood money like the rest. She should forfeit it but im not going to hold my breath till she does, like the other rich folks, it wont happen. Shame on them...
I HOPE no one purchases this crap...the fiance earns the profits??? How noble/charitable of them. Talk about a desparate housewife...they should treat them all like OJ Simpson...garbage.
Well put. She creeps me out. the whole thing is weird. Too bad it can't end with how they are helping out at soup kitchens or doing charitable work - with them - it's all about money. So sad.
I think that Ruth Madoff should be living in a trailer park and working for Walmart at minimum wage. I think her kids should return any money that they made in any business venture which was 'tainted' with Bernie Madoff's money. If any business venture that they are in was even partially tainted with Bernie Madoff money, that business should be liquidated and all the money should go to the victims. Andrew should despise the money that had his Father's touch as much as he says he despises his Father himself.
What a shame Morley. You missed a real opportunity. They admitted that Bernie paraded people through the trading firm. Bernie told the world that trades were placed through this firm. Yet, you did not ask, "Didn't you ask him to place the trades through the firm? Why did you allow him to place the trades (millions of trades) through a competitive firm?" They had to know something was terribly amiss.
Second question - and maybe Mark might not have killed himself. The "brokerage" firm never made the money to support the lifestyles of Peter, Mark, Andrew, Shana, etc... - the family members in the supposedely legitimate business. Why did you ask them why they did not immediately return the illegal money they received, sell the houses, apartments, etc.. NOPE - NOT ONE OF THEM DID. They did and still continue to live MILLIONAIRE lifestyles with other peoples money.
MISSED OPPORTUNITY MORLEY. Andrew and Mark's wife and Peter and Shana are still living off someone else's money. WHERE are the hard questions from a seasoned reporter?
I agree, talk about a gentkle interview...nothing new was revealed except for the supposed suicide attempt...which I don't believe for one second. That's the "detail" they added to hopefully sell this book. I just hope no one buys it.
