good men do not do nothing.....they risk their lives....they get the job done....they stand up and speak out for what is right and good and defend those that are helpless.

I would like to have heard from more people who knew Gardner and see what their account was of who this person really is. I think those things are crucial to understanding. I would like to know if there were any precursors that led up to his behavior. Everything is about prevention and I think that many people failed to do their part to prevent someone like Garder from taking these innocent lives. I see it everyday with our teens and how a lot of things could be prevented if only if someone did their job correctly. And I believe that that is the case here. I believe that it starts witht the family, the schools, community etc. People knew what he was like, yet didn't do their part to make sure that he did not become full-blown animal that he did.

i am not sure what can be done to deter incidents like this however the nature of our society and the tolerance of violence in itself surely has something to do with the belief of people of this nature or inclination that actions such as these can be tolerated or explained away as human behavior even in its extreme. the state bears some if not all the responsibility for incidences such as these.

When I first watching true crime on C.I!!! I thought these things happen only then i.e the 60s 70s 80s and a bit of the 90z and early 2000s. Boy am I so wrong. This things are still happening in my generation.
Unbelievable. I hope I wouldn't have to go through this agony when I eventually become a parent. God help us all.

I'm disgusted that 48 hours honored Gardner (he doesn't even have a name as far as I'm concerned) enough to give him a voice. Who gives a f*** what he thinks or feels? I would venture to say that his "psychiatric nurse" mother created this thing.

In my opinion, violent sex offenders cannot be rehabilitated. They, like many other types of criminals, should be immediately exterminated. This country's judicial system is a bureacratic mess and too lenient.

@ lcs067: While I completely agree that violent sex offenders are rarely rehabilitated (& the rates of recidivism are so high that we should not take the chance of releasing them into the public) I take issue with your casual blame of Gardner's mother. Gardner is a text book sociopath, and although sometimes intense trauma is to blame for an individual who feels the need to use violence, that is often not the case. Plenty of killers had a perfectly normal upbringing and were raised by loving parents. I'm not sure why you feel there is something wrong with being a "psychiatric nurse" but I "venture to say" that Gardner's mother knew there was something wrong with her son, and that is why he ostensibly received mental health treatment and psychiatric medications. It also seems, from his statements, that he abused his family as well.
Family members of killers are often victimized because people unfairly assume that "they should have known better" or that they caused the individual to become violent and many times those assumptions are false and unfair. Sometimes these people are bullied by friends and families of the vics (as seen in this documentary, sorry to say), they may be physically attacked, or they are generally ostracized from the community. Sure any grief on the part of Gardner's mom is by far dwarved by the tidal waves of sadness Amber's family has undoubtedly experienced, but let's not get carried away. Gardner was an adult who knew full well what he was doing. He is the only one culpable here.

Dumanis nailed it. Even in the jailhouse "I am the worst kind of sexual predator" admission, he was trying to create sympathy for himself. Sociopaths need to be put down. Period.

Those who neglected to enforce the laws regarding his parole violations should be held accountable.
