I started in my 40's and now in my late 50's my life is in fiancial ruins. It can take anyone down, gambling addictions don't care about age, race, religion or what you do for a living.
Mr. Reality-Check2112:
All you have to do is win! Maybe once, maybe twice. I have won over a million dollars in jackpots and a car and a houseful of TV's, china, crystal, grandfather clock and so many things that I had to give them away. I have been fussed over with not just free buffets, but the finest restaurants and I have seen every major entertainer in the business for "free". I have been chauffered to the casino, jet to any casino I wanted, or put on a ship as long as I played. I was lent interest free money all I had to do was come back in and pay it back and they would give it back to me the same day. All I needed to do was play......until my luck ran out. I stopped winning. Gambling almost stole my soul, it toook my sanity. I live one day at a time, careful that this gambling addiction does TAKE another bite out of me.
I think if a person realizes that the "Free Buffet" or "Free" anything a casino "gives" you is never free, but, enjoys going to the casino with a set amount of money to play with, knowing in their head the chance of winning big" is slim and none, then they shouldn't be looked down on by others.
My husband and I go once a week, $200 each, and when it's gone, it's gone. Sometimes we're lucky and win more than we brought, but, those times are few and far between. We both worked hard for our money, invested wisely, didn't have the best, nor latest toys. We owe no car payments, total credit card debit less than $500, and we will spend our retirement money as we see fit. We have told our children not to expect to inherit "our fortune" as we were going to spend it all. Our jobs together made us less than $60,000 a year, but, we planned well knowing we were going to be old someday and did not want to live like our parents did. Now...we are far from well off, but, we will never eat cat food or beg on the street. Sooooo...Mr. Reality-Check2112.....I don't think we are stupid people! We planned for this time of our lives and are doing we we planned to do..way back when we first got married, 40 yrs. ago.
The trouble alot of people have is they think they will be a "winner" at any kind of gambling...not...they may as well open the casino doors and just throw their money in and leave. Very few winners ever leave a casino, just loosers. But.....I'm having fun!
These horror stories are why my safeguards that address the FLAWS in our Gaming Laws, things like 24/7 gambling, Serving Free Booze, Cashing Checks, Offering Interest Free Credit, having Smoking areas inside, Free play and those so-called freebees known as Comps that make many justify their losses are imperative. Especially the one that makes our casino operators send their patrons CASINO MONTHLY STATEMENTS must come to fruition. Who knows how many individuals and their innocents families (CHILDREN) would be in a better domestic and financial situation today when being made aware of their casino wins and mostly LOSSES month after month in black and white? You can help make CASINO MONTHLY STATEMENTS happen by contacting you State legislators and telling them you support this legislation.

Part of the problem with these machines is that unlike other forms of gambling, like lottery tickets, etc, you have absolutely no idea what the odds are that you are up against. The machines are being programmed to return lower and lower yields and if gamblers knew this they would walk. There should be a federal law that all gambling establishments must prominently post the machine yield for a given type of machine or game that they offer -JUST LIKE POWERBALL AND MEGA MILLIONS do.
Give me a break, people who waste their money on slot machines are weak, lack common sense, and/or are simply bored and have nothing else to do. The older white haired woman said "gambling... takes far more money out lower income peoples pockets..." "Takes"? Gambling doesn't take, the gambler gives. This is ludicrous. If you are an adult and in today's economy you choose to waste your money this way, then so be it. Gambling is addictive, blah blah blah. People are stupid. Nuff said.
The majority of people that become hooked on slots have some form of mental illness, trauma and other emotional issues. If you took any notice of the clip you would have listened to the woman explaining about "the zone". This is because of the design of the machines that facilitate "cognitive avoidance" providing the perfect "escape" from inner turmoil. Don't for one minute dismiss the powerful conditioning capabilities of slot machines and their effect on the dopamine receptors. The parasitic gambling industry spends a sheetload of money working on ways of improving these capabilities. Where I come from in Australia, most of the revenue is from slots (called pokies) and a large portion of that is from problem gamblers. You, @Reality-Check are the stupid person, spouting diatribes from the comfort of your keyboard, without first doing some research. This is a disgusting industry preying on vulnerable people. Aim your misguided vitriol at them.
