Has anyone stopped to consider one problem for the aircraft explanation...how many 747's take off from 35 miles out to see. The video shows the contrail leading back to a point 35 miles in the ocean, and not the horizon. Plus...the contrails appear more like there was a "disruption" in the propulsion system, similar to a second stage or booster generation. It seems to me that radar images for the location and time would clear up the question...so why havent they been made available.
What is truely scary is that Gates came out and said it was an airplane. You can see an airplane in the foreground taking off from LAX. This just confirms that it was a Chinese missle exactly 3 years to the day after a chinese sub popped up right next to one of our aircraft carriers in the China Sea. What bothers me is what would have happened if that missle had crossed the coast headed inland. Do we have anyone defending our country or is it all a myth? All of our best military assets and soldiers are 8000 miles away and there is noone here to defend the homeland. Yikes!

I've seen Shuttle launches, 5 shuttle re-entries ..Including the brake-up of the Space Shuttle 'Columbia' here in Down Town Fort Worth, And I've watched the International Space Station IN ORBIT 100's of times in the past 10 and half YEARS, The Hubble Space Telescope, dozens of satillites and 100's of thousands of Air Craft at air shows and Airforce Base in New Mexico where I grew up... coming in and out of the Sun!!!! What scares me worse than a total conspiracy nut is someone with their eyes closed and ears plugged. This is NOT a plane, at least not one that's typical. Notice that there is only ONE rear firing center engine on this object AND a corkscrew affect on the contrail. This suggests that PERHAPS (if not a missile) it might be a Drone or some other military aircraft. It was RUMORED that it may have been launched from a U.S. submarine showing the folks in Asia (again, this was a RUMOR tossed about on another network) our capabilities of quick strike. Before you go calling people nuts, do some research.
This was an ICBM fired by a foreign nation at our doorstep to show America that they could do this. Do you expect the pentagon to say that we knowingly let them fire this missile? That we begged them not to fire this missile? Or that if they fire the missile we would go to war? Obama is the kind of president who would insist on ignoring the threat. No harm done.

1. Planes, other than military, do not take off 35 miles out to sea. Passenger and cargo jets require 2 miles of runway to take off.
2. Commercial aircraft flying out to sea is indicative of a trans-oceanic flight, requiring lots of fuel, which requires multiple engines to create the thrust necessary to lift the aircraft, it's fuel, and any cargo. The dual/multiple engine configuration in most jet aircraft often produce a well defined, dual condensation trail. Just look up at a plane flying on a clear blue day at 30k feet. The UFO (unidentified flying object) appears to have a single, thick column of condensation following its flight path, indicative of solid rocket propellant, rather than jet fuel which burns 'cleaner'.
3. The contrail appears to have two stages, which being the son of a Navy submariner, I know what dual stage sea launches look like. I believe the first stage can be seen in the footage; an almost vertical launch angle, evident by the contrail, which then flames out creating a nodule of contrail before the second stage ignites, sending the rocket at a much lower angle to maximize its effective range.

You are the smartest guy on here...Congratulations for talking sense. There is no way that was a airliner...I've seen more missile firings than many people, and it was immediately recognizable as a missile.

at 1:04 (bit before, bit after) there's what looks like a plane in the sky...has anyone pointed out how extremely dangerous this is??? someone knows exactly what this was that launched, be it missile or plane. what if this thing hit the plane? while the timing was not in sync, it looks like it went through air space fairly close in proximity.
mystery missile...that's gonna happen a lot. the military won't say what it is because they don't want to. no biggie. but if they're launching something through commercial airspace at a time when planes could be nearby...that is an issue people should be upset about.

The aircraft in the foreground at 1:04 looks and moves like a CH-47 Chinook military heavy transport helicopter, not a plane. Which would make sense if the military was observing a launch. They were plenty far away.
