I don't understand why some people felt that this 48 Hours episode was not respectful to the family, particularly the step-father. It is crystal clear that the stepfather is completely innocent. It is equally clear that the perpetrator is a sociopathic animal. Hearing him speak is helpful to the public. No one would allow their kids to walk, jog, or play outside alone after watching this episode. I hope the stepfather can forgive Amber's mother in time as ANYONE who loved their child would have been suspicious under the circumstances. She had to know 100% that he did not hurt her child and now she does. My heart aches for all of the people who loved this young girl. The rage on the perpetrator's face when that woman asked, "How is your nose?" was shocking, telling and terrifying.
Tastefully done show. I thought the interviews and the narration was very sensitive to the pain of all involved. My guts are ripped out for Amber's mother and Chelsea's family. Amber's mother is a brave woman to see John Gardner face to face and get the resolution she needed. Why would anyone question her right to know what happened to her daughter? In her grief, in her anger, in her anguish, only she knew what she needed in order to have "closure," and she knew she needed to know about Amber's last moments. I also salute Amber's father, who helped get legislation passed to prevent this from happening again. Don't judge Amber's mother until you walk a mile in her shoes. And thank God every day if you haven't had to. Peace to all.
I am glad that the stepdad was cleared. It is hard for people sometimes to accept that it only takes a second for a kid to be snatched. And it can happen right in borad daylight. Just because there are no leads, then the frustration to suspect someone seems to kick in. I was in elemntery school in San Diego in the 70's. During recess some teens or young adults walked to the playground and grabbed me by all limbs and proceeded to carry me off of the playground, and got me all the way to almost off the property before an adult stopped them. The police never captured who did that. My cousins were in the front yard in Oklahoma and one day a van pulled right up to the yard and grabbed my younger cousin. My older cousin put up a fight so they took off. They were captured later with a toddler they had nabbed. Takes a second, and can happen in broad daylight with people around or not. THAT is reality.
These murders were so senseless and brutal. I hope Gardener is eliminated from this Earth. I think the hardest part to watch is when Carrie confronts John's mother and demands a reason why her son turned out the way he did. She owed the families an answer. She still does.
If you will read my posts thoroughly on BOTH posting sites AND answer ALL questions, maybe some of these concerns would properly be addressed. We do know David Cave and have known him A LONG TIME. That is why we have such pity and sympathy for Carrie and her children. Carrie and Maurice are wonderful, brave, strong, loving, good people. Amber was blessed to have them for parents and they for her. This is a very heartbreaking time for them and we would never want to cause them pain, BUT there are still MANY unanswered questions that need solving. Maurice sold and lost everything to find Amber. Cave claims Amber was his daughter, too. Why didn't he sell everything to find her? She was his daughters big sister...so why didn't he try harder? Why the big sob story for him? Remember everything he is claiming happened between him and Amber is only HIS side of the story. She is sadly not here to tell HER side of what really happened. His story is full of gaps and holes any amateur sleuth can pick apart. We will close with this. Our deepest sympathy and prayers go to the Dubois and King families. May God comfort and protect you. And thank you for being brave enough to save other children while carrying such a heavy cross. God bless.
i know you posted this comment last nov but i dnt understand where you are coming from with mr cave? you dnt know what money he put into the amber funds he may not of needed to sell everything for all you know he may of had money. he was there with ambers parents all the way through the investigation. police always home in on the closest to the victim but sometimes it isnt someone they know like in this case. it was john gardner who led them to ambers remains it was john gardner who kidnapped raped and killed amber and chelsea not mr cave he had nothing to do with it so why are you so negative about him. 48 hours mystery spent too much time in my opinion pointing the finger at mr cave even when ambers mother moved out of thier home he still had her back and did everything to the point his own business was failing i am pretty sure he put his all into it. he has been cleared rightly so so why still make him out to be a bad guy? he brought amber up as his own and loved her like his own not many men will do that to me he is a good man. if he was so bad ambers mother wouldnt of moved back in with him and try to make things work of course mr cave is angry i would be it will take time for mr cave to deal with all this his name was basically dragged through the mud imagine if john gardner hadnt of killed chelsea mr cave would probably be sitting in jail an innocent man. ambers father sold everything so he could move down to where his daughter had lived mr cave already lived there he didnt need to sell his home and for that he should not be judged nothing happened with him and amber apart from family arguments that all familys go through with teenagers what do you think happened? why are you so against dave cave? mr cave gave amber a home and a steady upbringing, so they didnt get on all the time well that is no suprise to me i didnt get on with my stepdad when i was in my teens doesnt make him a bad person or a killer if he was that bad like i said why would carrie be trying to save thier relationship? i shall leave this comment like this my deepest sympathies are with both familys who john gardner ruined they are with the girl who managed to get away from him and they are with mr cave who has probably lost not only his stepdaughter but alot of friends and asscoiates just because the stepfather must of done it. ppl are too quick to judge and find them guilty before the real thruth comes out. especially the media.
Peace to the family of the victims. Not only the victims shown in this episode but all families effected by crimes of this nature. I can't imagine the pain your hearts feel....and I am SO sorry for your loss.
Seeing that I can only post so many characters, I am putting 1/2 the blog on each upcoming comment:

Dispatch: 48 Hours Mystery or Travesty
Posted November 8, 2010
Many were looking forward to the 48 Hours Mystery episode that featured the family of Amber Dubois. We knew and trusted the producer, having worked closely with her over the course of nearly two-years. Good things had resulted from the brutal kidnap and murder of 14-year old Amber at the hands of the sexually sadistic psychopath John Gardner. Friendships had been forged, legislation written and passed, and new understandings about the nature of evil and the shortcomings of California?s criminal justice system had been exposed. Why then, did 48 Hours focus on false accusations, bogus aspects of the investigation, and providing a bully pulpit to a self proclaimed monster?
Amber Dubois disappeared without a trace on her way to Escondido High School on the morning of February 13, 2009. Within 2 weeks the KlaasKids Foundation and Laura Recovery Center sent representatives to the San Diego suburb to organize a volunteer search and rescue effort. We worked for and with Amber?s family for more than a year, until her remains were recovered. KlaasKids S&R Director Brad Dennis facilitated Amber?s funeral and I hosted her memorial service.
48 Hours Mystery focused much attention on Amber?s step-father Dave Cave as a possible suspect. As Dave said during the program they did it because, ?That is where the statistics lead.? He withstood multiple interrogations and polygraphs, yet he was always there for Amber. When Amber?s mother Carrie moved out of his house he held his head high and covered her back. When friends and family suspected that he was involved he ?manned-up? and worked to bring her home. 48 Hours took a tabloid approach to Dave?s travails and chose to portray him in a less than flattering light, but unlike 48-Hours, who grovels on the floor looking for kernels of tragedy that they can exploit for personal gain, Dave Cave stands tall in my eyes.
KlaasKids and the Laura Recovery Center search and rescue teams have worked together numerous times to successfully recover missing children. Neither organization charges for that service, nor do we fundraise once we have arrived at ground zero. Our complete focus is upon working with law enforcement and in this case helping Amber?s family to recover their missing child. Therefore, I was shocked that 48 Hours chose to ignore our contribution and instead focus upon a live-scent mercenary K-9 team that supposedly followed Amber?s 8-month old scent 50-miles along a Southern California freeway. Anybody with any S&R experience knows full well that even under optimal conditions scent eventually dies. Therefore it is ludicrous to think that a paid K-9 team followed Amber?s scent along a road used by hundreds of thousands of vehicles per day after week after month. The television show notes that the dogs hit upon a spot a mile away from Amber?s still undiscovered remains. They forgot to mention that in terms of search and rescue a mile might as well be 10,000 miles and that the route the dogs followed was entirely different that the one Amber and her killer traveled on the day that he raped and murdered her.
Finally, 48 Hours provided a national, primetime television audience to the monster who killed Amber Dubois and Chelsea King. Both families thought that they were done with him, that he would be forgotten and die in prison. Instead they watched him opine about his potential victimization behind bars. They saw his face and heard his voice. The producer said that the interview did a ?Great job illustrating that these predators live among us and they don?t look like Charles Manson. They look like average Joe?s.? Really, that?s the best you can come up with? The Dubois and King families were re-victimized by a tabloid television program devoid of human decency.
Watching Gardner on primetime television reminded me of my own similar experience. In the days prior to the sentencing of the goon who killed and murdered my Polly, I received a phone call from Geraldo Rivera. He told me that he had been offered an opportunity to interview the killer on primetime TV. He said that he would take the killer down and expose him for the piece of **** that he really was. Then he said that he would only do so with my permission. I asked him not to do the interview as the thought of that monster ever again appearing in public made me physically recoil. Geraldo honored my wish, but two days later another reporter aired the interview on Hard Copy! I correctly accused her of using Polly?s tragedy to further her own career. I told her that any person convicted of raping and murdering children deserved to be locked away and forgotten, not provided with a national television audience. I told her that she, just like 48 Hours Mystery, was nothing more than a tabloid *****!!!
I am mystified and embarrassed by third rate journalism that purports to do anything more than entertain at the expense of truth, clarity and useful information. 48 Hours cherry pick facts in order to portray real life tragedies as nothing more than twisted, grotesque fantasies that re-victimize people who have already been victimized enough.
It is sometimes hard for people to believe that a kid can be snatched in broad daylight. When they have no leads they look at close ones. It is typical. I was in elementary school in Sand Diego CA in 70's and in broad daylight on a playground full of kids snatched by two - three people. They got me all the way up a ramp and almost off school grounds before an adult stopped them and police were called. My cousin was almost kidnapped right in their front yard. Van pulls up person jumps out snatches the boy and except for older brother acting quickly putting up a fight he would have been gone. Then not long after that a nother kid did become a victim by same van. Takes a second to snatch a kid. In my case it took even longer and they were able to get as far as they did. Kids can disappear realistically just like that. Yet it is still hard for people to accept that very scary fact when it happens to them or close to them or their neighborhood.
To KateJones9090,
I do not know what your agenda is, other than being a vicious, vile person. I am personally friends with Dave Cave and Carrie McGonigle. Dave Cave is one of the best people that I know. Your comments only prove to show that you are nothing more than a troll. You do not know this family personally and you have no right to post ANYTHING about any of these people. The mere fact that 48 hours allows your posts to stay put on this site just cements my already low opinion of this network and their horrific depiction of this man and this grieving family. Your comments are an attempt to add more grief to this family and I will not have that.
How are Dave and Carrie now ??? Dave's POS status was tragic effect of Amber's disappearance !!! I am glad that Amber from found and brought home to rest !!!
here here! i am from the uk and have just watched this 48 hours show i had heard of ambers case before though. in my opinion mr dave cave is a good man that took on someone elses child and gave her a loving home as if she were his own, just because they had times when they didnt get on means nothing what teenager doesnt argue with thier parents? i know i did. it just makes me think if gardner hadnt of killed chelsea king would dave cave be sat in jail fighting for his life? the police do get it wrong and when they had thier eye on dave they had it seriously wrong. if katejones truly knew the dubois family then she would know daves innocence so i do not beleive for one second she knows anything. she doesnt know what money or how much effort dave put in when amber was missing but it seemed to me he did all he could his business was failing he also had his own daughter to look after. katejones is hateful and trying to still make dave cave out to be a bad person why? i wander if she is related to gardner? and trying to make out something else happened well if that the case she has failed the right man is in jail he has held his hands up to what he did so why be so negative towards dave i dnt get it? i felt sorry for him and hope he has managed to wipe clean the mud that his name was dragged through. i hope ambers parents family and dave can get past this and the king family. such a tragic story at the hands of a monster john gardner.
This message is for Hate Jones (aka Kate Jones): I read your last comment which was obviously removed within 10 minutes of being posted. I refuse to go to your level of judgemental evil and pure hatered. Why are you so scared to come out and say who you really are? I have known Dave and Carrie for 10 plus years, you speak about them as you personally know them.I do not think you do. Are you seeking revenge? The questions you ask have been answered to the satisfaction of law enforcement, if they wern't, Dave would have been in jail. I would like you to read a blog, written by Marc Klaas, just a few days ago. I am sure you know him and believe and trust what he has to say:

Seems to me, Hate Jones, you're the one demanding attention in this case. My name is Stephanie and would love for you to seek help and demand attention elsewhere..I can refer you to a good councelor if needed. Have an awesome day!
As a fellow classmate and teammate of Chelsea King at Poway High, I would like to let CBS News how much this program has appalled the King Family. In a post of rage and grief on Chelsea's Light page, they ask how CBS could post such a program that did not take into account their family or their feelings. You as a news program have shown callous disregard for the King family, and have given the monster of an excuse for a human being a platform on which to give himself attention. I am ashamed at the actions of CBS news and seeing this program multiple weekends ago has brought up immense feelings of rage and remorse on the campus of Poway High School. I hope next time that maybe this news station covers all of the aspects of the story instead of disregarding people who still grieve and mourn the loss of their beautiful daughter every waking moment of their day.
