What she is saying does make sense. Lots of people say 'send more condoms', but at the end of the day, people that want to have children (and that want to have children that will live for more than days or weeks), will have children - simply, they will not use birth control until the goal they have has been achieved. If the gates foundation can keep more children alive and (hopefully) healthy, then the birth rate WILL naturally lower because mothers will stop trying to reach 'averages'. It doesn't require much social knowledge to learn (as a mother in a third world country) if you give birth to 4 children in total and 2 live that 2 might just reach adulthood and (I would assume) then be able to support their mother in her older life. I think a lot of this is about necessity rather than what some believe, ignorance.
Gates is wrong on her theory about the women not bearing more children when they know 2 will survive. These women are not culturally that sophisticated, they?re peasants. They stop having so many children as wealth increases as we have seen in the developed nations.
I?m wondering what their motivation really is. They?re spending all this money to help more kids survive who have been borne by destitute people who can?t feed, house, educate, nurture or mentor them who in 10 years will be having more kids who can?t be feed, housed, educated, nurtured or mentored. I?ve been in many of these countries, it?s more about the culture than the lack of resources.
Maybe the money could be better spent on a cure for cancer, developing nuclear fusion and/or pure science or technology?
I am appalled by this comment and it should be removed. It sounds like the writer of this comment is not "culturally sophisticated". And to call these people "peasants" is disgusting. These people if given an education would probably excel over many if not most of American children who are given free education here in the states, and (sad to say) take their free education for granted. I visit orphanages in third world countries and when I meet these children and see their potential, it's heartbreaking that they just do not have opportunities. They may not have TVs, clean clothes, or proper food, but I see their resourcefulness, survivor's drive, and often ambition. This does not mean they are less of human beings. They lack the dreams and opportunities that we are granted in America. There is a lot of money poured into doing research for cancer. The Gates have chosen education as their passion and life calling. It is THEIR money and this is how they use it to be productive citizens of the world. I'm sure that the writer above is not very charitable and in my opinion lacks any class or "education." I'm sure those "peasants" you referred to are far more spiritual and loving and HAPPIER than you could ever imagine for yourself. Once again, someone takes an initiative to make positive changes in this world, and the only comment that was posted about this great interview was negative. I commend the Gates Family and am happy to see that they are planting seeds of hope for these children.
