I am very surprised with the way this whole war is currently being handled. The Afghans does not deserve to be saved. They seem to have an attitude that the US army is there to punish them. Wining the war there looks unlikely. We should just walk away from it. Feel really sad for all the young soldiers out there trying to stay alive from the crazy madness. The end seems so far fetched. In the end is it worth it to loose so many lives. I am so pissed at the way these muslim countries are behaving. They do not know how to live in peace nor do they want to let others live in peace....Not sure who can teach them a life leasson.
It makes one wonder if the Afghanistan people would rather have the Tali-ban control their lives. They don't seem to be volunteering to join in the fight against these terrorists.
A friend of mine in-country tells me that the Afghanis have no wish to return to Taliban control, but the flood of well-armed "foreign soldiers" from Arab and other countries keep crossing the Paki border into Afghani borderlands where heroes like Capt. Hintz, John Vowell, and other US try to curb the flood of these invaders. The Afghanis want their girl-children to go to school and learn [or get an opportunity to learn] some skills besides housekeeping, according to my [female] American diplomat friend, but our hands are tied by Holbrooke and Hilary blaming Karzai and doing all sorts of finger-pointing at Zardari in Pakistan while these heroes hold the fort [literally!]! Obama's spineless decision to pull out in 2011 shows that politics is the guiding principle of this administration.
The segment on Relentless Enemy was very good and as real as it gets. It seems to me that we're fighting the taliban with one arm tied behind our back. Post our snipers on the ridges and pick them off with suppressed fire. Without due pressure on Pakistan to stem the flow of insurgents in/out of Afganistan our troops are not going to make progress. What would Pakistan do if we carpet bombed that ridge on the border? Give the villages short notice to get out of the way and pummel the remaining taliban back to the stone age. Let our troops fight to win.

My Thanks to Lara Logan (and her brave cameraman for bringing this story to TV. It brought tears watching the soldiers stuck in this ruthless battle. We may not win this war but I'm sure glad John Hintz, Joe Vowell and their soldiers are fighting for our freedom vs the Taliban. There are just too many backward thinking religious warriors to overcome on the battlefield. I hope we make it out safely.
iBear, you hit the nail on the head. The number of "backward thinking religious warriors" that Islam can call on in a jihad is endless ... kill one, and three more pop up, willing to behead infidels in the name of Allah. The Crusaders were the first not to "get it"... refusing to understand the uncompromising zeal that drives Islam. The Brits didn't get it during their imperial phase ... and the Russians, who suffered the same consequences as the Brits, didn't get it. Finally, our brilliant neocon conservatives, who persuaded Bush, Cheney & "Rummy" to send in the troops, didn't get it, no surprise. So we sacrificed over 4,000 of our brave soldiers and Marines in Iraq for nothing; and before we finally withdraw from Afghanistan, pray to God our troops don't suffer the same number of fatalities. The bitter lesson: 1. Stay out of the Middle East. 2. Inform "visitors" from the Hoover Institute they are non persona grata anywhere within the Beltway. 3. Read up on Islam, especially the violent faction that assumed control of Mohammed's movement in the 8th century A.D., then sent forth an army of Muslim warriors to conquer and put to the torch every Western country they conquered, beginning with Spain. Oh yeh, and behead every Christian and Jew unwise enough to oppose them.
I am touched to my very core to have seen this segment and to see our men and what they are facing there. My prayers will be with them from now on. I wish everyone could see this segment. Good job to the reporters. Excellent job well done to our military. God speed.
I watched The Relentless Enemy segment last night with thoughts of my son who will be deploying to Afghanistan in January. As I watched I sat in my bubble of denial that my son would be deployed to an area much safer than this one. I received a text from him this morning "Hey Mom, 60 Minutes did a segment last night on the unit we are replacing. It's on the website, it's called A Relentless Enemy". My bubble of denial has been burst!
USArmyMom ... this IS my son's unit. He told me what he went through, but I don't think it really sunk in until I saw this segment. I pray that our sons come home safely.
were he is deploying to is not that bad of a place, he is replacing us im guessing 8 months or so from now. Do you know what fob exactly? He will be fine there has not been that many casualties over here so far, the Taliban suck at aiming, they just fire blindly.
