I am offended by verbage used by the newscaster of the Recession Halts Student's Hope article. I am an ultrasound TECHNOLOGIST, not an ultrasound technician. The difference is: Technician-6 weeks or on the job training and no certification(s) or yearly education requirements; technologist-2 years of training, certifications in multiple areas (obstetric, gynecologic, adult cardiac, fetal cardiac, opthalmic, abdominal, breast, etc.), yearly continuing education requirements, and soon, retesting. Statistics demonstrate a huge difference in skill level, diagnostic accuracy, image quality, and
exam time.
Currently there is a CARE bill in front of congress requesting that technicians performing exams be required to advance their education. If
they do not do so, under this bill, insurance will not reimburse for the
exam a technician performs.
This is a really big deal. Many hospitals, physician offices, and clinics will not employ technicians. Please consider using the term 'technologist' when discussing people studying for an ultrasound profession.
