Well, some are, of course. And big business definitely is. It is interested only in making money, not the health or well being of its customers. Only money. You can say the same about the Food and Drug Administration, which regulates tobacco. The country should be called the United States of the Dollar. :-p

I promise you if everyone who smokes today would start "snusing" we will save hundreds of thousands of lifes every year around the world! Snus is not harmful for you, it's just a myth build up by old fasion statements. The snus we have in Sweden today is probably not more harmful than sugar! god damned we have world class athletes which is using snus on a daily basis!

I feel sorry for anybody who is so addicted to a substance they have to have it 24/7. My father is a lifetime smoker, tried to quit several times, but was never able to overcome it's power. My dad is now almost 70, looks and acts 10-15 years older than he is, has numerous health issues, and he and my mom haven't had sex in years because he is now impotent and she finally got tired of how he smells. For all those in the "you're gonna die of something, someday", let us know how the last 10-20 years of life goes for ya, OK?
I started using smokeless when I was 14, and tried to quit for almost 10 years. It was absolutely impossible. I hated it, but I couldn't go a day without it. Eventually, I started smoking to wean myself off of smokeless, and it worked. Cigarettes are also addictive as hell, but you're not getting that high dose of nicotine directly through your gums into your bloodstream. And you can't smoke in a lot of places, which is actually a good thing. Ultimately, you get less nicotine in the course of a day, and by gradually smoking lighter and lighter cigarettes, it's possible to quit. (I imagine nicotine patches could also help.)
Using smokeless tobacco was one of the worst decisions of my life. If you've never done it, don't. It's a terrible addiction that I wouldn't wish on anyone.
I have been using Swedish Snus for nearly a year now, and have stayed away from cigarettes the entire time. From my experience the only health problems are some minor gum recession and an occasional mouth sore, and smoking caused me the same problems - so that one is a wash I guess. Also, it seems like my nicotine dependence is stronger with snus to a certain degree, because I have the option of using where I would not have smoked (business meeting, gymboree, etc.). Ultimately, it is a big plus for my health, I don't get winded or have sinus problems like I did with smoking, and the thought of smoking, and the smell of it on people, now really repulses me. Thanks for doing a fair story on snus, because it really could lives if it were more widely used here in the U.S. The guys at the cigar store where I buy it might look down on me a bit, but I think they smell anyway!
Don't forget that snusing still raises your blood pressure and increases your chance of getting one of the deadliest cancers around - pancreatic cancer. And mouth disease (receding gums, sores) is linked to other diseases in the body.
I have done the exact thing that this topic refers to. But what happened is just as stated by some. I smoked and dipped at the same time. I would wake up in the morning and dip in the shower, afterwards drink coffee and smoke, smoke on the way to work...then dip while at work...etc. What I found is that I was addicted to both products. Eventually the dentist questioned my gums and at that point scared me into quitting dipping.
American "snus" is a joke. RJ Reynolds, just stop! Little free nic, a foul tooth-rotting taste, massive pouches, and less cancer risk-cutting. The only real snus is Swedish.
Dude, Snus is the SHIZ. I was researching pipe information and got linked to info about Snus. I read about the loose kind thats like dip. I went to the cigar store and asked about it. They had samples of the Real Deal. I tried it. My first instinct was to spit because I swallowed RED MAN when i was a kid (i still remember how ****** I felt) On to not Spitting. Its really cool. It tastes like Earl Grey tea. And Its Salty which is also very nice. Being a purist of sorts, I find myself unwilling to go for the Camel stuff. I like Camel Products but I have given up Camel Wides for some time and do not intend to return. Loose Swedish Snus isnt really available. I hope the pre-packaged stuff goes over well and eventually all the other kinds become available.
As a Swedish snus advocate, I'd love to see 60 minutes do a follow up story to their last show. I would love to see you highlight a few people that have seen real health benefits by quitting smoking using Swedish snus. Not some kid who sees snus as a novelty that he can secret away while in class and still get his fix, which is still great by the way.
I remember the very first movie that my wife and I attended after I began using snus. It was great because immediately after the movie, I didn't want to reach for my smokes, because I had been snussing the entire movie.

Real Swedish snus curbs the nicotine cravings completely. Camel SNUS and Marlboro snus do not, as they do not contain enough "free nicotine" to satisfy the cravings for nicotine that a smoker has. They market their products in a "use it when you can't smoke" fashion, which tells me that they only want to collect more money from the addicted.
RJ Reynolds, and Phillip Morris are merely trying to replace revenue that has been lost due to people quitting smoking. These companies have been villified over the years, and rightfully so in my opinion. They are copying a product that was invented and has been in production for over 200 years in Sweden. You don't have a product on the market for that long unless it's good!
If RJR and PM really want to emulate the Swedes and produce snus, then do so...but follow their production methods to the letter. How about you print the ingredients of your products on the can....the Swedes do. The difference is, Swedish snus manufacturers don't have an ulterior motive.
They merely want to produce a superior product, tell you what's in it, and then sell it to a willing public. Sure, they want to make money, making money is a good thing isn't it? As long as they don't make money at the expense of the health of the consumer, as RJR and PM have done for decades.
Please, please...anyone that has tried Camel SNUS or Marlboro snus, try the Swedish version, they did afterall invent snus. As a matter of fact, they've perfected it!! Great companies like V2 tobacco, Gotlandssnus, Swedish Match, JTI and BAT...keep up the good work!
