Thanks for discussing this. I have friends who visit the US from Europe. They are always amazed at the huge amount of food and drug tv adverts we are bombarded with. We are accustomed to it, no wonder we are unhealthy.

Great interview Katie! It was refreshing to see a journalist challenge the person interviewed as you questioned Dr. Kessler when he said people should stop consuming habit forming fast foods. We all know it is the answer to obesity. The question is will people ever comply?

Great program...just wish it would be aired on tv but I know these are very controversial subjects. I can only imagine the push-back you got from your anti-biotics in meat story. Even here at the local affliate (KOTV) the Oklahoma Beef and Pork councils reacted strongly and the local tv station aired their position. Of course they completely denied that putting anti-biotics in meat was inappropriate or harmful. Now, I dare you to do a piece on High Fructose Corn syrup. It's in Everything! (Soft drinks are PURE High fructose corn syrup now) There IS eveidence that it is one of the major components of obesity.

As a pork producer, We are tested for antibotics. The tolerance is 0
We denied antibotics in meat because the violations would cost us the farm ! We do not test our own meat - the USDA does the testing. If a test comes back positive. The meat is rejected. You are not paid for the product. You are charged processing fee. And you can not sell for 30 days. then only allowed to sell 10 hogs, Every hog is tested. then after 2 more weeks 25 more hogs are allowed. If ever a positive result. you can not sell for 6 months. That will put out of business.

What's wrong with high fructose corn syrup? Mercury for starters, it is a known neurotoxin, and high fructose corn syrup is ubiquitous in foods marketed to children. The Washington Post reported on a study where mercury was found in common products found in supermarkets. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/26/AR2009012601831.html

Thank you, Katie. This was fascinating. Please do more stories like the one about antibiotics and industrial meat production.

Very interesting interview...such an important topic. It drives me crazy when everything we do has to involve food. We definitely need to change our habits.
