Hello mistyteen and sallychicago,
I am still trying to figure out what your comments have to do with the devastation down there? I think absolutely nothing. You guys are being selfish and have no regard for human life. Yes Haiti is over populated and the President is most likely injured like many people in Haiti!! Show some compassion!! New York wasn't hit by an earthquake but Haiti was!! New York has had their share of grief also that was also a tradegy. We must pray for the Haitians and stop nit picking over things that don't really matter! As for tt247jer, you are so right in that aspect, the US France among others always want to show the help being given but we as a country are partly responsible for their lack I must say and I do live in America, but I am glad that we can all put our differences aside and still provide help from all over the world. This is how I feel and I am not the type to argue so if there are crazy responses I am not going to entertain it. Take care!

NYC is more densely populated than Haiti. Over-population is not just a Haiti problem.

In hiding, or looking for cameras lamenting that he lost "his palace and his home." Boo hoo. Grow up, Mr. President. That is not your palace; it's the people's palace. And start helping around, not just looking around for CNN, MSNBC, etc.

Another reason why Haiti is poor is because of over-population. You can't put 2 million people in a city for 40,000.

The mainstream media do not typically make any attempt to put current events in historical perspective--witness coverage of the conflicts in the Middle East (do you ever see Operation Ajax mentioned, for example? It's nearly impossible to truly understand the present scenario without considering it).

You are absolutely correct that Haiti has been exploited by France, the U.S. and other governments (as well as its own corrupt leaders). But uncomfortable, ugly facts like that don't sit well with corporate sponsors nor a significant portion of our population. Thus we get sanitized, superficial news coverage.

Why doesn't anyone mention why Haiti is poor to begin with! 200 years of abuse by France and the U.S... 200 years that took Haiti from a prosperity to devastation.

Amen to that.
On the other hand I've always liked dr. Hyman's book, and now that I know what a humanitarian he is, I like it more.
