As Otisbdriftwood stated... Steinway is more Asian that American. OK, he didn't specifically say this, but let's have a look at the Steinway Musical Instrument holding group. Samick, owns more than 50% of Steinway. And not only are the Boston pianos produced by Kawai in Japan, but the Essex pianos are made at the Pearl River piano factory in Guangzhou, China. Steinway is lieing to technicians and telling them that there is no difference between a Germany made "Hamburg" Steinway and one built in New York.. if this is true, then why does Hamburg Steinway continue to use RENNER action parts and hammers and NY Steinway is teaching technicians that there has only been two iterations of action part dimensions, both manufactured in the US. Can you say Pratt Read? I love Steinways. But I absolutely abhor lies and deception. From an outsider's glance, it would appear that 2/3's of Steinways are, in fact, built in Asia. So... are only the US built Steinways an "investment"? That is certainly not what several Steinway authorized sales consultants have told me. It is these very blatant lies and deception that have degraded and are rapidly leading to the demise of most of the US piano manufacturers, with Steinway heading the list. Henry Steinway promoted the pianos on a very simple axiom: "To build the best piano in the world". What has happened to that foundation... that commitment to excellence? Somehow, pushing workers to produce MORE parts and more pianos, produce them FASTER, and to use LOWER COST materials.. just doesn't seem to fit into Mr. Steinway's legacy. True greatness does not need to be proclaimed, defended, or implied.. it simply is what is.... so why all the smoke and mirrors Mr. Losby? Honesty trumps shady trite antiquated marketing techniques every time. Live up to your potential... it's not about the money... it's about the art... the craft.. the legacy. It's not too late. Please.

What bothered me is that this was more about an advertisement for Steinway rather than mentioning ANY of the other U.S. piano companies. Steinways are not an "investment" at all since they like any other product plummet in resale value as soon as they leave the showroom floor. Plus they sell "ALL" the piano they can make in a year? How many do they make? They don't make that many! Who can afford them in the general public?

Wading through 40 minutes of commercials to get to hear this lame expose` and only a casual mention of the Ivory Wars that China is waging in Africa and wiping out their wildlife for $$$.

There really was nothing about the WHY the pianos are not selling in the US. Who wants to hear Billy Joel play chords in their home? Without the voice and harmonica his piano "playing" is nothing more than Czery chord studies. Lang Lang's shoes are a nice touch too.
