If I believed that a 2% cut in budget growth meant so many essential services had to be cut I would agree that Congress should be blamed. They are not the ones threatening to take your EMT, firemen and police off the street. We don't run our households that way. We trim our spending appropriately and don't scare the dickens out of our families when we try to get our spending under control. Because of unnecessary demagoguery you are willing to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Get real and simply ask Congress and the Administration to cut some fat and make a start. Arghh!
I certainly agree that the sequester is more like a sledgehammer rather than a scalpel.
However, with that said, based on the feckless abilities of our current congress to think straight, address issues head on etc. What alternative is there?
Rather than the blunt force of the sequester - I would say to congress: OK, you have 72 hours to move from blunt force to scalpel - do it or the fault rests on your shoulders and you agree to resign en mass if you cannot accomplish it (your staff as well)
The bottom-line is that first: they have had almost 25 months to deal with this - first in 2011, then by December 31st 2012 and now - they have abjectly failed on 2 deadlines already. Second, we find ourselves in the situation we are in wholly as a result of what congress has voted on in the past - it has finally caught up to them (meaning us) now.
I blame the entire congress for the situation we find ourselves in today and would call on members to do the right thing - resign. I think we could go a couple of years without passing any new laws - we cannot even absorb what we have now. We are strangling ourselves with many meaningless regulations, laws and adding ridiculous earmarks that add weight to our drowning.
