I think he chose Marti (if indeed he thought consciously about it) because she is tiny, and in his eyes would be easy to kill. The same way loads of these types hurt animals, he saw her as powerless. It's amazing she survived such a beating and is as good as she is; a miracle in fact.

I agree with others that unsolved murders ought to be looked at for similar signs, as it doesn't seem to me like this was his first time by far.

Also: what of his childhood? I heard an expert from Texas (he's a lawyer and works with a lot with death row inmates) that 99% of their childhoods featured severe abuse from their caretakers. This does not excuse their behavior, and I would NEVER accept this as a reason for lighter sentences, but it may help us to understand how such people become they way they are. In fact, it would be a reason for keeping them locked up for life, fair or not.
I concur with those who say they think Brian doesn't know why he did it. And this is why he ought never be free to hurt innocent people ever again, for 54 years of age is quite young really, he will have plenty of time to disappear and reinvent himself somewhere else. This is not acceptable.

Why not just round it off to 30 years imprisonment instead of 28 and a half years? If I am the judge I have no qualm to round it off to 30... Just a tot.

Kudos to the excellent detective work on this case. These detectives seemed to have a sixth sense! Thank heavens they took this creep off the streets before he could hurt anyone else.

Brian Pennington sure is a dead-eyed zombie. What happened to him to make him this way? I can't help but see a clue in the absence of family members at his trial. Or then again, maybe some people are just born evil...

Why did he do it?
I think the problem this guy was fear, panic and rage. He clearly had bills to pay and and didn't know where or when his next job was which gave him fear of how he was going to pay his next bill or fear of being evicted. I am sure he was in fear every time the phone rang. This fear would put him in a constant edgy panic state. He did a job for Marti and I am sure he felt some relief to have some money to pay his bills. When she told him that she would call back soon to get more work he probably depended on that statement. I think that he he thought about how Marti was going to call back soon and he was waiting for that. Hoping for that job to get out of his situation. I think that every time a debtor called that he blamed her for not calling and became more and more enraged at her for not calling. I think that he became so obsessed with this rage at her that he finally went over there and did what he did to her. Of course he belongs where he is and this is way I see it. It's sad for everyone. I am glad she is better and I hope she and her family get through it okay

I wanted to add what made me think this. It was the interview with him .I listened to it here on the site. It is labelled as an interview with his wife. He says in the interview "she said she was gonna call back, but she never called back" . It was the way he said it that seemed desperate and irritated. He later said that he told her was going to come by to see if she needed more done but never did. I think he said this to try and hide the the quote (which was a slip up) he said above

I don't think money was a motivation as he stole nothing from the house, and the cops said there was money out in the open, as well as other valuables, her purse, etc.

I am very happy Marti survived and put him behind bars. This monster is SICK and should NEVER be out of jail!!! Sick and mental psychopath don't need a reason to kill. He doesn't know why he did it...and for sure he would do it again and maybe ?... there are some unsolved murders that he was involved....They should check his previous employment.

I think this guy was filled with rage towards women. These detectives were so sharp in getting this guy off the streets. He apparently felt they would never suspect him & I believe if he had killed her she would have just been the first of many. Although this was a horrible ordeal I was struck at how she did not allow this man's sickness to engulf her life. She is also blessed to have a beautiful family, a truly remarkable story and example of how violence is so random. I hope he enjoys all 28 years he so richly deserves.

The fact that Pennington carried out this brutal unprovoked attack in such so a cold and calm manner tells me he is a psychopath and a serial killer who probably killed other women before he met Marti. He should be in prison for life because when he gets out he will kill again no doubt about it.

It's obvious he hates women. He probably hated his mother and was envious of the beautiful home and family Marti has. He is a classic sociopath for being able to manipulate and dominate the women he's been with. It was a clear pattern with this one. I'm surprised his current wife woke up and had the sense to admit the truth of his whereabouts that night. Pure evil, this guy. I think he had nothing to say simply because he was so angry and bitter that Marti survived. He'll be 55 or 56 when released and no less dangerous. But a lot can happen in prison, where a lot of inmates miss their own mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters. What a tough woman Marti is. Her children are right to be so loving and proud of her.

@Loyal2Family...I can only assume that you are related to Brian considering your every comment seems to defend him and his family. While it is understandable to love him and also to recognize that his actions are not a direct reflection of your family, please make no mistake, he is a MONSTER. What he did to this lady was savage, brutal, disgusting and inhumane. I am no expert but I think in 28 and 1/2 years he will still be a danger to society. Before I lay my head down tonight, I will pray for all involved in this terrible ordeal. God bless....

Definitely. This guy will definitely still be a danger in 28.5 years. This should have been a life sentence.

I am in no way condoning what he did, just setting the facts straight. Just because he did a horrible unthinkable act does not give anyone the right to speculate that my family are cruel and disrespectful people! I have not responded to any comments about Brian being a "psychopathic monster" only the ones where people want to bash my family and make accusations that my family is a deep root to why he did what he did. We all know a very different loving and caring man not this person that he made himself out to be.

All I could do towards the end seeing her overcome this so well by mind heart and body, was lower my head. Everyone she had contact with even her ex-husband were still at peace with her. I felt like an ox. I just felt like groaning peacefully for her.
