I would like to see him in a mental institution rather then in prison for 29 years without the help that he needed.

He would get no help in a mental facility. He belongs in prison.

I don't believe in coincidences. The fact that her mother's home was broken into just before then. He is manipulator. I think his MO was to get close to the family, fix up something and go back and burglarize when he needed to. She just happen to be home that morning. Like her family and friends said she was a work-a-holic and he may have not counted on her being home. Since he had driven all the way over, He didn't want to take the chance that she had just left her car there, so he knocked on the door. He beat her because he felt like she messed up his plan.—He felt like she took the control from him by being home and he had to take it back. Abuse can be a learned but crazy is something you are born with. His choking her was taking the power back, him beating her was-rage and losing control—All Crazy.
I am so happy she survived and has wonderful friends and family to support her. I know everyone wants to know the why behind it. Sometimes knowing God is with us in all times, has to better than any answer Brian could ever give. God Bless and Keep It Moving!

That seems really good until you remember he didn't steal a penny. They said she had a wallet and no money was gone. If that was the motive and he thought he was going to get away with it, he would have stolen whatever he could.

I think he was just a paranoid, violent sociopath. She might have done or said something that he took as a personal insult. He could have been obsessed with killing her.

I definitely think he either was already a serial killer or would have become one down the line.

I think he chose Marti (if indeed he thought consciously about it) because she is tiny, and in his eyes would be easy to kill. The same way loads of these types hurt animals, he saw her as powerless. It's amazing she survived such a beating and is as good as she is; a miracle in fact.

I agree with others that unsolved murders ought to be looked at for similar signs, as it doesn't seem to me like this was his first time by far.

Also: what of his childhood? I heard an expert from Texas (he's a lawyer and works with a lot with death row inmates) that 99% of their childhoods featured severe abuse from their caretakers. This does not excuse their behavior, and I would NEVER accept this as a reason for lighter sentences, but it may help us to understand how such people become they way they are. In fact, it would be a reason for keeping them locked up for life, fair or not.
I concur with those who say they think Brian doesn't know why he did it. And this is why he ought never be free to hurt innocent people ever again, for 54 years of age is quite young really, he will have plenty of time to disappear and reinvent himself somewhere else. This is not acceptable.

Why not just round it off to 30 years imprisonment instead of 28 and a half years? If I am the judge I have no qualm to round it off to 30... Just a tot.
