Did the street car ever leave New Orleans in order to comeback ? there's been a working street car in New Orleans for as long as I can remember anyway.

Yes and No. Preservationists and streetcar fans fought hard to have the St. Charles Line designated as a National Historic Landmark back in the 60's when New Orleans Public Service (transit company at the time) was converting all remaining streetcar lines to bus routes. So for about 20 or so years until the Riverfront was established (late 80s), New Orleans had only the St. Charles line. The success of the St. Charles Line and the Riverfront Line has spurred the re-establishment of the Canal St. Line and now the Loyola Line. RTA is planning more extensions as well.

In this story you talk about San Francisco's streetcars but you show footage of a cable car - two very different things.

San Francisco's MTA actually has streetcars in service - http://www.sfmta.com/cms/mfleet/histcars.php including a streetcar from NOLA's Desire line.
