Right for all you with negative comments, I volunteer at the Wales Ape and Monkey Sanctuary, and have done for the past six years , every chimp is well cared for at the sanctuary , Nakima if you had listen lived in a home with a human before she was rescued and that is why she wears blankets etc , she now lives with her own kind and lives the life of a chimp, and she wants for nothing , as with all the others she lives with , she lives in her own group with others , as is normal with chimps , they are sociable animals , and under no circumstance should they be pets for humans , these are dangerous animals and should be treated with respect every Ape and Primate at the sanctuary has been rescued from bad situations , here they will live out the rest of thier lives with dignity and as always are treated with the utmost respect , as for living outside they DO NOT, THEY HAVE A HUGE PLAYROOM DURING THE DAY WHERE THEY CAN PLAY AND GO IN AND OUT AS THEY PLEASE , IN THE NIGHTS THEY HAVE THIER OWN INDIVIDUAL BEDROOMS WHICH ARE HEATED ,the average fuel bill is £2000 per quater during the winter months , which is very high to keep every animal at the sanctuary warm, this money is met with donations from the public etc as a non profit organisation every penny goes towards the animals which you will appreciate is very high with rescues and vets and heating etc , so before you critisise please get the facts , they all do a wonderful job and deserve all the credit they can get, go to the sanctuary website , there you will get the history of each animal , and why not adopt one , that way you will be helping towards thier upkeep etc and helping to rescue more who are in dire situations , no animal has ever been turned away Jan and Graham Garan along with thier staff do a fantastic job and have given up thier lives to care for these primates .
First, the chimp isn't a he, it's a she. The keeper said that several times throughout the piece. As far as it being the worst story CBS could run, I guess you're okay with watching war shots of humans blown to bits; victims of violent crimes, etc. but watching a chimp do what seems to come natural to her is too much. She would go inside of her own volition if she was too cold. The blanket is as much a security object for her as it is a warming device. She's very fortunate to have been rescued to admitted to this sanctuary. Her fate would have been far different otherwise. I have nothing but praise for well-run and well-staffed primate sanctuaries. It takes a very patient and special person to work with these animals since most of the primates have been severely traumatized due to being taken from her mother at a very young age, then being converted to a "pet." She's living as close to a natural life as she's ever known, and were it not for the sanctuary, she very likely would be dead.
Thank you for being concerned about chimp Nakima, but you needn't be. All the animals at the rescue center have heated quarters. And in fact only the chimps venture outside. So the chimps choose to be outside and enjoy the snow. As Nakima wearing a blanket, she is always wearing a blanker and/or sweater as she was brought up in a family home as a young chimp. I hope your worries are gone now. (and I do know this, because I was one of the volunteers that knows Nakima after her rescue from the family home, and I have been following her wellfare ever since, she is in great hands)
Some people unfortunately jumped to wrong conclusions. First of all you need to check out www.ape-monkey-rescue.org.uk and/or the facebook page Wales Ape and Monkey Sanctuary. After you'll have read the info and seen more pictures, you will know that the rescued chimps there are being looked after in a fantastic way. Being outside is the chimps own choice, they like playing in the snow; they can always go into or stay in their warm inside enclosures if they wish. Of course we all know chimpanzees are no pets, as well as that it's wrong to humanize them by dressing them up. Nakima was rescued by the sanctuary after she had been kept as a pet in a house for 28 years. As a result of that life she lost most of the hair on her back, which is why she likes to wear a blanket or sweater all year round. Nakima leads a happy life with her own kind now, she gets wonderful care, as do all 70 rescued animals at Wales Ape and Monkey Sanctuary! I hope the negative comments will be deleted; they couldn't be further from the truth. Kind greetings from a supporter and visitor of the sanctuary.
THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST AWFUL STORIES I HAVE SEEN ON THE NEWS IN A LONG TIME. I FEEL HORRIBLE FOR THE POOR CHIMP AND YES BRING HIM IN FROM THE COLD. STUPID PEOPLE SOMETIMES. OH AND I DIDN'T THINK IT WAS FUNNY WHEN THE NEWS CASTERS LAUGHED EITHER. I LOST A LOT OF RESPECT FOR YOUR CBS NEWSCASTERS WHO ARE ON AT 5PM CHICAGO TIME.
