- A few years ago I drove to most of the national parks in the Southwest and hiked and camped to my heart's content. Carlsbad Caverns is a gem, BUT hardly a nature experience. Get ready to shuffle behind ladies that have driven over from Texas. They are generally doused in perfume and have a rather loud running commentary on what they are seeing. Get in, get out, then go for a hike in the desert.
