- Ben needs to understand that the plan isn't to eliminate the mortgage deduction but to limit it. The mortgage deduction is basically a government subsidy on your home which most countries don't have. The rich don't need the government subsidizing their home purchase with the mortgage interest deduction, though eliminating this would hurt the high end home building industry.
