A number of people have wondered if there is anything they can do. Others want to pressure their elected officials to raise the issue with North Korea. However, talking with North Korean government officials would be like talking with Stalin or one of his henchmen.

The way to resolve this is to ask your elected officials to pressure China to stop deporting North Korean refugees back to North Korea. There is no reason why China could not simply allow South Korea to come and get them in buses. However, China does not want a U.S.-friendly country on its border and so does everything it can to prop up the North Korean government. Contact President Obama and demand that he pressure China to stop indirectly killing Korean refugees.

And while you are at it, you might consider looking at the labels of everything you buy and only buy products made in China if you have no other option. And stop shopping at Walmart, as virtually everything it sells is made in China.

Oops, I forgot to finish my thought. North Korea imprisons, tortures, and/or executes North Koreans who attempt to escape or are deported back there. That is why it is so important to pressure China to stop the deportation.

In 2003 I went to an Embassy of China event in DC and took the opportunity to speak with the then Chinese ambassador to the US, Yang Jiechi, about these human rights issues from N. Korea. (Yang Jiechi now happens to be the Minister of Foreign Affairs in China.) Amazingly, to me, at least, he listened as I went on about these problems.

Amazingly, to me, at least, he listened- no gruffness, no self-importance. I spoke with him about the human rights problems in China and in N. Korea and asked him to respect human rights and also not to send the N. Koreans back.

So, unfortunately, this is not a new problem.

Though many are aware of N.K.'s stifling repression, this segment was illuminating nonetheless. Thanks for airing it on widely-seen '60 Minutes'.

While this story is one of a place that is totally removed from the sight of the world, and most of the comments are of how touched they were by the man who escaped, and rightly so. The events and cover up by the U.S. media including 60 Minutes at the Branch Dadidian church at Waco Texas in
April, 1993 beg the question where was all of this anger when we as a nation watched the sanitized, made for TV explanation of those events in this country? Caring about your own comes first."Everyone's values are defined by what they will tolerate when it is done to others." William Greider. We as a nation can do little about the events in North Korea. But we could have done something about the events in our own country (or what there is left of it.) But with the corprate media, and its we will tell you what you need to know operation. Which is dictated by the big money interest's that own and control it, most Americans are getting a steady diet of Paris Hilton, and other mindless dribble. So they look no further, because what they might see might not be nice to see. So it is obedienct to the "Pay no attentioin to that man behind the curtain." directive from the tube.

Before we get dragged into another save the world operation from 'THE WAR DEPARTMENT" (lets call it by its rightful name) lets put our own house in order.

An mishmash of conspiracy theory, out-of-context quotes and disconnected cliches strung together with poor grammar and a functional illiterate's concept of punctuation is NOT what most would call "well said".

See below posts for much better examples.

I totally disagree that we must put our own house in order before we do anything else. There will always be disorder in our own house that we will be busy dealing with; but we must be able to do both, at the same time.
You don't say what we should or should have done about the Branch Davidian tragedy.

You must remember that there is a difference between involuntary and voluntary imprisonment. Besides, you are comparing apples to oranges. What are you trying to say, because what you've said doesn't really make any sense. People in this country have the right to choose; this young man did not have that right, so what's your point? And what do you mean when you say "where was all this anger ...?" You're not making any sense.

Melanie Kirkpatrick's book "Escape from North Korea: The Untold Story of Asia's Underground Railroad" lists a few North Korean charities and links at the end; that list is below. If you want to see a list with functional URLs, see my blog entry at the very end of this post. Crossing Borders appears to be a charity very worthy of your money, as it supports orphanages for Korean and Korean/Chinese children abandoned in China (Disclosure: I have no association with them).

Crossing Borders
Liberty in North Korea
Helping Hands Korea
318 Partners Mission Foundation
U.S. Committee for Human Rights in North Korea
Good Friends: Research Institute for North Korean Society
Korean Church Coalition
North Korean Refugee Services Mission
Defense Forum Foundation

Saucy Mugwump, thank you for sharing all of these organizations. Another one you might be interested in is the North Korea Freedom Coalition. It's chairwoman, Suzanne Scholte was the winner of the Seoul Peace Prize a couple of years ago. NKFC is a consortium of non-profits and non-government organizations all focused on helping North Koreans and North Korean Defectors. Suzanne is also the president of the Defense Forum Foundation.

This is a powerful story of the atrocities that are still happening to this day. I have to agree with other posters here that something needs to be done. Awareness is the first step. Now the world at large should take this issue up. I can now understand how someone can get so profoundly upset by this. I am and I have only seen a slice of this story.

I am not surprised people are surprised about the existence of these camps. Stuff like this happens all the time, but people in America refuse to believe it. There are certainly places like this in Russia, Burma, and especially China. Hell, you can look online and see people murdering people on websites easily accessible by any lay computer user. A new one pops up every day in Mexico, Brazil, the middle east... beheadings, shootings, rape... look for yourself. It's sad but the sooner you come to know the sooner you can make a chance.

Also, Anderson Cooper, stop mocking this guy. He talks about a serious issue and Anderson Cooper makes snarky observation about the man's notion of "freedom" (talking about when he snarks at the guy wanting to eat some chicken). Pathetic.

Absolutely right on about Cooper! What an empty suit. I read Blain Hardens "Escape from Camp 14" months ago. While I'm grateful 60 min would do a story about this very powerful story. I tuned in to the program just for this story, but won't do so again any time soon. Cooper didn't come close to doing it justice. Read the book!

The stupidity of the common American neanderthal. You Europeans killed millions upon millions in the last few years for your "expansions". Theres no such thing as these "camps" anywhere in the world. The US is more communist and marxist than china in terms of policies. The US government is corrupt and thats why its going nowhere, not because of foreign influence. The Chinese invented paper, printing, firearms, rocket launchers, silk, porcelain, firt written history, compass, mercury lakes, great wall, grand palaces, the most superior army and navy in the world, with ships 20 times the size of Columbus' santa maria and also it was armed with hundreds of cannons along the sides while the little europeans were busy fighting as little "knights" for the honor of their kingdom and waging "holy wars" killing millions in the process. Even accepting human trafficking(slavery)and enslaving and raping millions of people. Even during the world wars, u kept on killing millions of each other. Even sending millions of your own people(the jews) into labor camps. And now, bombing thousands upon thousands of people in the middle east to benefit your oil supply. The white race is the greatest evil in the history of mankind even though it has only been IN POWER for 300 years or so. Soon, the greatest and most advanced human beings(tell me why asian nations have the highest iq) CHINA, will regain our former glory and stop u neanderthals from continuing your terrorizing across the globe.

Read The Orphan Master's Son, recently published by Adam Johnson, affiliated with Stanford University. Probably as much horrific fact as fiction.........a society unimaginable to those in the free world. How can anyone emerge without detachment disorder from these prison settings? The first proactive step we can take is to become aware.
