I am not so sure, but I am some what shocked by the presence of medical students addicted to gambling. Gambling is some thing you bet with your money. But, here is the fact, This suspect has been a broke: He owes at least 10000 US$ for education etc, and then gambling? He better watches his own mind, asking WHY he wants become a doctor.
From third party perspective, he is not the kind of med student wanting to make a difference in people's lives, but make money; Big money!
I do not want my doctors to be like that with such wrong mindset and attitude; I am not expecting any thing perfect from doc. but at least they got to have the kind of right mind set and ethic that must come behind all he or she does. In THIS case, Markoff is not appropriate to begin any type of professions that deal with medical, welfare, and care.
On top of all, medical practice isn't an easy job; You may need to work long hours, early on, and yet can't neglect patients' need. Then you still keep your mental and physical health - No Gambler can get that kind of right deiciplins required in medical practice or ANY professions.
Also, his girl friend was blind enough to be fooled. Lavish lifestyle made a young woman, but seems she does not know him very much.. Does that really say it's true love?

Well....

This shows her character, she's a great woman...Now it seems she may have to move on. It's so tragic that this young man, who had such a wonderful future ahead has been caught up in this madness.

I can hardly believe anything I hear these days and since I don't have first hand knowledge of this case I can not and will not judge this young man. His life is ruined already!
