The story they were trying to tell, whether one sided or not, is that you need to look deeper into everything. Just because a company or anyone says they are going to do something a certain way doesnt mean its going to happen that way. Im kinda upset that people are able to transport this stuff overseas when its illegal, and what its doing to the people and the enviroment. Just because the wastes over there, doesnt mean it cant affect us here. Its another example of a country having a law but not having the intelligence to make sure its enforced!!!!
Lets get real here.E-waste isn''t China''s one and only problem! This country has over a billion people and has no rights for it''s own citizens! Most of these people live in poverty and the conditions in most factorys( not just the e-waste)are the same as the ones reported in this clip.We did not create this problem and it''s up to the Chinese goverment to improve their quality control and conditions for their citizens. How much product is being made for the U.S consumer under the same conditions? How much product is arriving in the U.S on a daily basis tainted with led or chemicals that shouldn''t be there? Lets stop picking on the local recyclers that are trying to survive in this market like everybody else and look at the bigger picture.
In a very one-sided manner 60 minutes does not even begin to explain what the residents of those Chinese towns WOULD be doing if it were not for the e-waste business. I think it%u2019s safe to say that if there were other options available [to them] they would have elected to do it and left e-waste as a last resort.
It amazes me to see how concerned we are with the computer e waste that ends up in China but we don''t look at the whole picture. What about all the goods we buy from China?Does anybody look at the conditions these workers have in these type of plants?Isn''t it up to China to try to regulate their own conditions in the work force. That''s right its ok to buy from China but not to send to China. We are a bunch of hypocrites!
Go to www.ban.org and www.e-Stewards.org to learn about an emerging certification program, e-Stewards, that will fix this once and for all. Thirty-two of the best recyclers in the U.S. have already signed up; more are being qualified now. In the near future the certification will evolve to a fully accredited, 3-rd party audited program; for now it is still the best assurance that a recycler is holding to a "no prisons, dumping, or export" standard.
