Suburban Chicago Man Retrieves Stars And Stripes That've Been Tossed; He's Grabbed Hundreds
- >folks that rescue flags are the same folks that supported george bush, jr....
I would rescue a flag and I didn't support either Bush, bud! - Reply to this comment
- The way congress has waved the stars and stripes to defend ruining this country, while committing conspiracy with corporate America to commit TREASON,,,,,you would expect to see the flag stained with brown streaks from all the BS that congress is pulling ...all in the name of patriotism,,,,,,MORE BS. To refer to ANYONE in Washington as representatives of the people is an outright lie.

- You are not supposed to throw away the American Flag if anything you are supposed to burn them when they get to old as far as I am concerned just keep them and put them in a box somewhere in your house.
What is the problem with Americans today don't they have any respect tor the most beautiful flag anywhere in the world?

The best thing to do with them, is to take them to your nearest American Legion or VFW post. They'll be glad to dispose of them properly for you, and some even sell replacements if you would like to buy a new one. - Reply to this comment
- "Olsen believes most people throw out old flags because they don't know exactly what to do with them."
You toss them in the rest of the trash, they are nothing more than cloth, plastic or paper with a design on it.
"The Pentagon says they should be disposed of with dignity, preferably by burning them.
But today's synthetic fibers create toxic fumes, which is why, Gerasole notes, the American Legion burns them in a crematorium."
Oh fine, so waste fossil fuels and pollute the air buring this stuff instead of just simply disposing of it, people like this guy are obsessed, I'd say he has OCD - Reply to this comment

What a clown!!!
Like conservatives and republicans are the champions of the flag, while burning and shredding the constitution at ever possible instance!!! - Reply to this comment
- Looks to me to be a story about a man who happens to retrieve US flags that have been disposed of improperly (as part of his daily work). Some he keeps - he happens to respect the symbol of our country, as do I. Others (likely a majority) he arranges for proper disposal.
Although the story does not say so, I doubt he sought the recognition he is receiving, but it is being bestowed in good faith by groups with a history of supporting this country in their own way.
I think many of the comments here regarding over glorification of the flag of our country are overdone, based on this story. Respect the flag for the symbol that it is, handle it properly and remember that the good things you have are due to people who have respected and do respect the flag's symbolism and representations. - Reply to this comment
- We must be vigilant with our leaders and never worship them as they do not always have our interests as a country at heart.

Well said....but I fear that our "American Idol" nation is heading the way of the Roman Empire.

Agreement from this corner, too.
America is right now as close to a democracy as much of the world ever gets, and democracy REQUIRES citizen participation - Conveying our needs to our representatives, being familiar with the constitution, voting, demanding free speech and appropriate laws, watch dogging our leaders, and when necessary, protesting loudly and effectively.
I get awful tired of armchair critics blithely bashing one of the political parties, or any administration, even the last one, most of whose damage to our nation has yet to be laid out for the public. Easy to criticize, isn't it. Easy to sound smart, either with erudite observations or by attacking someone else's point of view.
But truth is, you're not much of a citizen if you're not doing something. Why on earth criticize respectful handling of the flag? Mr. Olsen is doing something. Just because the article doesn't mention it, who's to say he doesn't serve his country in other ways as well? For the critics here, what are YOU doing? Anything useful? At all?
If you're not stepping up the the plate in some way, prepare to kiss this country and what freedoms we have here goodbye. It won't last long. - Reply to this comment
