I doubt a gun or machete would have helped in this case since the man was all wrapped up inside his tent. And all a little gun would do is really pi ss off the bear. Bear spray would be a better option.

And people wonder why I carry a gun in the woods. Four legged attackers can kill just as easily as those on two legs. My little .45 auto might not stop a bear dead in his tracks but it%u2019ll sure get his attention.

I actually sleep with a machete next to me when i camp up there.
Could of come in handy in this instance.
Mmmmmmm....nice bear burgers, steak, not to mention the nice bear skin rug i would have!

Never sleep when in predator, animals or humans, country without caution and awareness of danger. Always post a sentry throughout the night by sharing watch shifts. Never camp alone. Be prepared for anything even violent death. This man and the others were not prepared at all.
