I've had with ESPN/CBS announcers sucking up to S Williams, and not just in this past tournament. It has been going on for a long time. For instance, why are the Williams's always referred to by their first name when all other players are called by their last name? Except for a very few occasions there is only one of them on the court at a time.
Venus has always been a class act but Serena acts like an other member from the hood. Tennis doesn't need this type of representation, enough of the other pro sports all too-well represented by these negative characters as it is.
I understand her position to argue the call reasonably, but it was unnecessary to continue as long as she did. The best part is that she confused the umpire with the one that ruled against her two years ago. LOL. The only positive of William's verbal assault Sunday is there was, apparently, no profanity. Punishment? I suggest keep her on probation for at least another year.
And finally, Carillo's questioning of the call to Williams during the awards ceremony was out of line.

ikahbodt7 Serena has done nothing that John McEnroe has not done practally every match he played. I assume that you think that McEnroe acted like someone from the hood as well or since you made mention of the hood, is it just a race thing to you?

It's obviously a race thing for meshine. stop making it a race thing meshine. I know your black and it's getting annoying now. You're starting to sound like Richard Williams (Serena and Venus's father). John McEnroe is from a different era and he still got fined A LOT more than Serena ever did. LOOK UP THE FACTS BEFORE YOU KEEP TALKING!!!

It was embarrassing for me to see such a poor display of sportsmanship and just plain whining on an international stage. When most of the country on Sept. 11th was celebrating our hero's, here the tennis world saw an American athlete whining (in New York City of all places). She was/is not the victim that she apparently has convinced herself of. She lost 6-2, 6-3. That point did not decide the outcome of anything. It did reveal her character. Her play and Ms. Stosur's play decided the outcome. Congratulations to Ms. Stosur for her championship play. Australia's can be proud of her. She displayed real professionalism. The official was correct and also demonstrated real poise and professionalism.

I am sorry but this just keeps proving what everybody is always thinking, both Serena and Venus should have been fined, suspended and banned from womens tennis since the first professional match they ever played, because with all the steroids they are rumoured to have taken, they have the physicality of men and should be playing on the mens side. When they have these outbursts and they begin to lose, it is 'roids speak and they resemble what it might be like when a good male player is losing to a better female player and they cannot deal with it. In the meantime they have taken unfair advantage of the sport and been unfairly advantaged over many great woman players over the years and all to their substantial personal and unjustified financial gain. USTA step in and do what should have been done years ago. Transfer them to the mens side or ban them.

ToolMangler Why should the situation be a touchy one because Serena and venus are black? Please explain that statement because most blacks know that the odds are against them from the start. Blacks know that they're going to have to be exceptional to be competitive in a sport like tennis because tennis has traditionally been dominated by Caucasian players. Skin color should have nothing to do with the rules. If the rules call for testing, then all the players should be tested. Since you made the statement, give an example of them acting like they were entitled to something that the other players wern't entitled to.

Another remark by meshine confirming the fact that he/she is black and can't stand everyone here who speaks the truth about Serena. BTW meshine, notice how this whole time I've been only talking about Serena. Serena is the real problem. She is just a disgusting person.

All Americans need to learn a second language and travel to Europe, because class (and intelligence) is definitely lacking on these shores. I hear it constantly from the Europeans. Now that America has removed God from the forefront, the nation has nothing to be proud of at all!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Why do we need to learn a second language? English is the international language. And as far as your assessmnet of American behavior, I work with some britich people and they have stated the the European perception of Americans is completely wrong. Those who have the opportunity to live and work with Americans have a positive view of us.

I have to say that the CBS female commentator, Virginia, was horrible towards Serena for the whole match, and it wasn't the first time. Virginia only won one Wimbledon, and the Brit is clearly jealous. Her co-commentator didn't say much because she was so full of hate. She should go back to the U.K.

Wow, where did you get that perception from? Lots of people listened to the commentary and didn't get that from her comments. Sounds like the hate is coming from you, not her.

Virginia Wade horrible to Serena for the whole match???? The woman was totally rubbishing Samantha Stoser from her opening comments! Admittedly i could only watch/listen for the opening 3-4 games as i had to go to work but please the bit i did hear she was basically saying just give the trophy to Serena now there is no way the Australian can win. WELL DONE SAM!!!!!!

That's what taking steriods for decades will do to you.

Also, if one call is going to cause you to lose a match then you'd better practice some more.

Yet another reason why I question the fact that people playing a game are both idolized and are getting paid millions of dollars. Go figure. Let's pay them money to act like brats. Really, their claim to fame is that they are good at a game. Yawn.

Oh for goodness sakes! How is Serena Williams any different than any other professional athlete who have over the years acted in less than a professional way? As if you don't remember the tantrums of John McEnroe. She was having a bad day and acted badly, as if even you haven't ever reacted inappropriately.
1VNVet replies:

McEnroe was a spoiled brat also... Everyone has a bad day but when you are in their position, ;you are held to a higher standard and acting like a 2 year old brat is not the standard and telling a line judge that she had "done this before" when in fact that judge was NOT the judge in question before just shows here complete lack of maturity!

I love how every time some idiot compares JOHN MCENROE to SERENA WILLIAMS. Why don't you compare her to:
Caroline Wozniacki
Maria Sharapova
Victoria Azarenka
Vera Zvonareva
Na Li
Petra Kvitova
Samantha Stosur
Francesca Schiavone
Kim Clijsters
Marion Bartoli
Andrea Petkovic
Jelena Jankovic

From the first ball williams mishit it was apparent she was not on her game but the william's a$$ kissers, mary carillo and john mcenroe kept making excuses for her. Not only that but this article makes it sound like williams only started playing poorly after the call against her which is patently false. Stosur beat williams to a pulp from the first ball to the last.

Is it within the realm of possibilities that williams was just having a bad day and the better player won? IMO, williams is a poor winner but most importantly she is a mean and vicious loser. They need to throw the book at her because clearly she did not learn her lesson the last time she threatened an official.

Anyone defending Serena here clearly doesn't know her history OR is willing to overlook that history in favor of her talent or by saying "everyone else does it too." Serena's history is very, very clear - she's enormously talented but has zero impulse or anger control AND when caught in her bad behavior refuses to own it or offers a non-apology apology. There are plenty of champions - equally talented - who behave appropriately when they lose and when they win. Serena is not one of them, Venus is. Sooner or later sociopaths like Serena - who are paid millions of dollars by sponsors - either grow up or fall from grace permanently. One could argue the Johnny Mac has grown up; but he will always be known as a "bad boy." Perhaps Serena will grow up, but given the consistency of her behavior over the years, it's doubtful.

Anything to keep her from winning. For as long as I've been a fan she's grunted when she swings and if you look at any match on youtube you will see the same thing. As for her reaction, if you felt like someone was singling you out during a championship match, what would you do. John McEnroe lashed out at many refs in his day for bad calls and he is still one of the most respected retired players in the USTA. She called her a hatter and she was correct. What happen to the older refs that use to oversee her matches. The younger refs are much more bias.

I don't believe in glorifying athletes when they act like idiots, win or lose. Go home Serena! There are a lot of tennis players who know how to act AND play well at the same time, and I'd much rather support those who better represent what this sport is all about.
