- [According to public opinion polls, almost six-out-of-ten people believe the economy is already in a recession.]
how would any of the six ... or even the ten ... really know what a recession is ... and how to recognize it? - Reply to this comment
- There is one beneficiary of a recession: the military. When jobs become hard to find, more people enlist. Bush must be delighted.

- Inflation is good for debtors (the vast majority of citizens) because it pays off their debt by devaluating money. Paying old debts with inflated money is cheaper.
But inflating the money supply destroys savings and makes investment more costly. This limits economic growth.
Recession is a side effect of inflating the money supply (courtesy of the Fed). Prices rise, capital investment decreases, and unemployment spreads.
What could be worse? Depression, if you are a debtor (that''s you, isn''t it?) Prices drop, interest rates drop, and money becomes more valuable. You have to pay your debts with money that is harder to come by. But on top of that, you still have reduced production and increased unemployment--which really hurts debtors.
The Fed fears depression more than inflation, which explains why they are pumping hundreds of billions of dollars worth of fiat money into the economy. They will destroy the currency before they allow a depression. - Reply to this comment
- The way the article reads, economists are getting us ready for a DEPRESSION, not recession. I have heard that the last time there was a "recession" this bad was another another idiot Bush ("Big Daddy" Bush Senior) was messing up the country 17 years ago!
As far as getting ready for the lean times coming (but they are already here!), what can you do when you dollar becomes as worthless as the ink its printed with. When the big "R" or "D" officially happens, it will take buckets of paper money to buy a gallon of milk or a dozen eggs, or a loaf of bread! The rich, thanks to the Great Emperor Bush II, will have gold to buy things with, but the working class will have "toilet paper" dollars!
And we will have the Great Emperor Bush II, and all his stupidly loyal Fascist neocon Republican allies to thank for it all!!!!
