Americans are spoiled silly. At the first sign of hardship, they are ready to jump ship. Anything more than a "soundbite" is too much for many Americans. This reflects in poor investment choices, spending more than they can afford, wanting the government to do everything for us, and expecting all of our problems to be solved for us by others. In spite of this, many foreigners clamor to be in America. Sounds like we are do better than many other places.

No need to enlist the priviledged. America has plenty of school dropouts and people with no or few skills. As in the past, the military provides employment, skills, and opportunity for people at the bottom. Many doctors, lawyers, and teachers got their opportunity for education from the military. The GI Bill provided unbelievable opportunities for WWII soldiers and their families.
