Dick Meyer: Thoughts On Building Up And Tearing Down Celebrities
- Absolutely unforgiveable firing Don Imus. Do Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson sit home waiting for the phone to ring about incidents like this. The black race can say WHATEVER they want about blacks but let a white person say the same thing and WOW---fire, tar and feather the guy. How can they sleep at night knowing they have actually fussed until Don Imus lost his job. Are they thinking about all the good things he has done in his lifetime. I dare to say he is a better person than either of them. I seem to remember that forgiveness is a good way of life. Maybe they should start on all the rappers-get them fired and off the air and tv.
I will not be watching CBS, MCNBC, or buying from the companies that dropped their ads because of him. I hope he ends up like Howard Stearn did--maybe they will grab him up on Serious Radio and he'll even make more money.
Good luck to DON IMUS...........! ! ! ! - Reply to this comment
- I, for one, am tired of this one-sided racism, of the political bully-ism and big corporate hypocrisy. This extends from the president to the mediamongers that are mentioned throughout this forum. Having some black roots myself though not "noticeable", I've spent the last two days joking around at work asking if I was a "NHH". It's a GD joke what we have to put up with lately. No wonder the rest of the world laughs at us. We're the United Comical States of America.

- What Mr Imus did was very sad but he has appoligized. How come CBS is so unforgiving. God preaches when a person admits his mistakes and asks for forgiveness he will be forgiven. Your station is following the money trail with Roker, Sharpton. I though Sharpton was a minister of the Lord. He is a bigger sinner than anyone has he has sinned and continues too but continues to judge others. Shame on you CBS. You have totally lost my support and I will no long tune you in.

- This was the best, most intelligent piece written about this media bonfire. The comment, "We can create celebrities, but not leaders" is oddly complex -- the notion of "leader" being both old-fashioned and desperately out of date. It is tragic that this debate has to center around fundamentally stupid, ill-advised commentary rather than words that contain some whiff of honor. Well, I guess we have all left honor behind. Perhaps more folks in the media such as Mr.Meyer might take a shot at bringing it back? Hardly likely but one voice in the crowd is a start. And all the best to Imus who may have deserved public condemnation for rank stupidity but not for a an ill-bred and wolfish appetite for personal gain based on destroying the reputations of innocents. Al Sharpton he is not.

- Firing Don Amus was too severe. This man has a kind heart who has helped many kids with problems at his ranch. If CBS has any kind of decency you would hire him back and apologized to him. I am not condoning what he said but he did meet with the basketball women and apologized. Don Imus unique perspective on issues has left television on the bland side. CBS radio is a gutless radio company.
